Many of us have grandchildren that live a long distance away from us, and we’re always looking for ways to keep in contact and make memories with them. Today’s technology makes it easier to connect and communicate with our loved ones. I personally love to use FaceTime for video chatting with my grandchildren. You can watch movies at the same time, color together, chat and play games during your virtual time with each other.

Besides FaceTime, here are a few other apps to keep in touch with your grandchildren.

Google Duo

Recently, Gigi Connection ladies were asked to review a digital book through MakeMomentos.com. I decided to narrate a digital book for my 5 year old granddaughter, Isabelle who lives in California. Isabelle loves to read and when I visit her, I love the story times that we share together. The book I chose to read to her is called “Wooly, The Wide Awake Sheep.” This is a story about a sheep that could not fall asleep and visited many of her farm animal friends to find out how they fall asleep.

To begin the process:

Browse their library and purchase your e-book. Book prices range from $14.95 – $24.95 and there is a good selection to choose from. Most of the stories are for ages 0-8 years old.

Record your book – it saves automatically and you can re-record any page. You can also do a 30 second video message before reading the actual story. This took me a number of tries to get it before I liked what I said and how I looked. Once I realized this was my voice and this is how I look, I moved on – ha ha!

Send your gift to your loved one via a parent’s email address.

This process was super easy and the feedback I received from Isabelle was that she loved the book and me reading it. By the way, she can view and listen to the book as many times as she’d like.

What a great way to connect with family members through the power of storytelling! For parents that work outside the home, your child can stay connected to your voice throughout the day by listening to a story that you recorded as well as grandparents that would like to stay in connection with their long distance grandchildren.

They have many holiday titles to choose from and I plan to order digital books for my grandchildren right after Thanksgiving and record it with my husband so they can hear our voices when we physically can’t be with them. They can listen to the stories over and over again.

There are many benefits to reading to children and they are never to young to be read to. Storytime is so important for brain and language development.
