National Read Across America Day -March 2nd

Each year, National Read Across America Day is celebrated on March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. In honor of Dr. Seuss, March is designated as National Reading Month. This is a month to motivate all Americans of all ages to read every day. So, who is this author that we honor?

Here are 8 interesting things you might not know about

Theodore “Ted” Seuss Geisel,

also known as Dr. Seuss:

He got his sense of poetry from his mother

He never had any biological children

The pen name “Dr Seuss” began as a way to escape punishment in college

He joined the war effort

He was a successful ad man before a children’s author

His all-time best-selling book was created on a bet

He gifted the English language with “nerd” and redefined “grinch”

He wrote two adult books, one with nude drawings

As grandparents, we know the importance and connection we feel when we read to or with our grandchildren. If you missed our blog post about ways to connect through reading, click here.

Most of us have read Dr. Seuss books – either to our children growing up or as we were growing up. Here are some of the classics as well as some you may not know. It’s time to pass these classics down to the next generation to read. They will bring a smile to your face and theirs.

The Cat in the Hat – this classic picture book is about a dreary day that turns into a wild romp when this beloved story introduces readers to the Cat in the Hat and his troublemaking friends, Thing 1 and Thing 2. It’s a favorite among kids, parents and teachers as this story uses simple words and basic ryhme to encourage and delight beginning readers.

One of the first Dr. Seuss books that I read.

My Book About Me is a keepsake book that kids will answer questions about themselves such as how tall are YOU? How many teeth do YOU have? Where do YOU live? What do YOU like to eat? This is the perfect gift for special birthdays or for reading year-round. This book will hold special memories long after it is filled in.

Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are? This classic book provides the perfect antidote for readers of all ages who are feeling a bit down in the dumps. Thanks to Dr. Seuss’s trademark rhymes and signature illustrations, readers will, without a doubt, realize just how lucky they truly are. It’s a good reminder for adults as well.

Oh, The Places You’ll Go! book is an inspiring and timeless message encouraging readers to find the success that lies within, no matter what challenges they face. A perennial favorite and a perfect gift for anyone starting a new phase in their life!

I absolutely love this book!

A Fish Out Of Water is a classic book about a boy that hilariously learns the consequences of not following instructions when he feeds too much to his goldfish—causing it to grow as big as a whale! The message of the book is that getting a pet is a big responsibility—is as true today as it was when the book was published in 1961.

I have enjoyed reading this story to my grandchildren as well.

My Big Buck of Beginner Books About Me is a collectible collection and makes a great gift.

Eyes, ears, teeth, noses, feet, knees—practically every living thing has got them—and their variations are fascinating, especially to young children.

Books in this box set include:

The Foot Book

The Eye Book

The Tooth Book

The Nose Book

The Ear Book

The Knee Book

To make these books come to life, I found a website to give you ideas on activities and snacks related to Dr/ Seuss books. Here is the website.

Let’s all celebrate National Reading Across America Day (Thursday. March 2nd) and National Reading Month (March) together reading to our grandchildren.

“To the world you may be one person but to one person you may be the world.” — Dr. Seuss
