5 Favorite Phone Apps for Grandmas

If you’re a smartphone owner, as we all are, you probably use mobile apps every single day. Whether you’re video-chatting with a grandchild, playing games with your friends or checking Facebook, a mobile app makes all that possible to do. Today there are literally millions of apps available and it can be overwhelming to pick which ones are worth getting and using, so we decided to share the five favorite apps we’re enjoying and are easy to use!

Gigi LoriI love to read books but don’t always have the luxury of sitting by a pool or reading in bed to read some of the great books out there. Instead, I downloaded the audible app to my smartphone and can listen to books wherever I’m at (in the car, exercising or doing chores around the house). It’s easy to do, go to audible.com to download the app. When you sign up, you will get a 30-day free trial and then after that it costs you $7.95/month to listen to your favorite audiobooks, audible originals and podcasts. You can cancel at any time. If you like to read, like I do, try this app. You won’t be sorry you did.

Happy reading!

Gigi SusieAs a photographer and a proud Gigi, I take a ton of photos and videos of my grandchildren on my smartphone and I find it hard to delete any of them. I knew I had similar photos, duplicates and videos that needed to be purged but couldn’t find the time to go through them.

However, I recently found this app, Cleanup: Clean Storage for my iPhone. Let’s face it: cleaning up your photo library can be so time consuming and difficult to get rid of some of your precious photos. This app is rated 4.3 out of 5 stars. You can use the cleanup pro for 1 week and it is $3.99 or for a year it is $24.99. What this app will do is find duplicate photos for you to delete, similar photos that you can delete, merge duplicate contacts & help organize your library. Once it locates the duplicates or similar photos, you have the option to keep them all or delete them. Be sure to swipe to go through each one of them. Depending on the amount of photos that you have, initially this will take a little bit of time; however, if you do it weekly, you will free up storage on your phone & have a more organized photo library. I can tell you this, I freed up so much space in one night for just going through this app for a 1/2 hour then I would if I took a 3 hour flight. You can download this app here. Give it a try and if you don’t like it after a week, be sure to cancel your subscription.

Whatever you do though; however, don’t stop taking and creating precious memories with your grandchildren.

I came across the Picture This app while working at Poppies Flower Shop. We have so many varieties of flowers come through the shop and we know the majority of them. Or, in my case, probably know but can’t remember the name of some of them. We also get a lot of new varieties that we want to identify. You just snap a picture and you have all the information you need. In addition to the species it gives a brief description including tips on how to care for the flower or plant, if it is currently healthy and other interesting facts.

This app is not just for someone who works in a flower shop. I have found that I use this app quite often outside of work as well. This weekend my grandchildren and I walked around their yard identifying some of the plants and flowers and investigated the varieties of plants they planted in their garden. It told us if they looked healthy or if they needed more water or light. They really enjoyed learning about them.

I also admire flowers or plants when I am on vacation or taking walks in a neighborhood or hiking. I can use my app, learn the name of it and determine if it is something that will withstand my Arizona climate. I also use it when I am shopping for plants and flowers for my home to get additional information on where and how to plant and care for them. Those little labels don’t really tell you everything you need to know. You can also diagnose issues you may be having with plants currently in your home. Just snap a picture.

If you love Gardening or just curious about the name of that beautiful flower that you have just discovered, you would certainly enjoy the Picture This app. You can try it free for a week and then it is $29.99 for a year subscription. When you realize how much you enjoy using it and how fun it is, you will find it is worth it.

Take care!

Mimi JackieI was first introduced to the Fetch Reward app by my sister, (sisters are the best)!! I thought the timing was great because this is an App that turns your receipts into free gift cards and you can also earn cash back when purchasing specific products. The gift cards you can earn are from your favorite retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy, Delta, T.J. Maxx and Marshalls, Southwest, Target, Visa Prepaid and more! And with inflation, I decided I was all in!! The app is so easy to use and all information is anonymous, so you don’t need to worry about your privacy.

One of the best parts of using Fetch Rewards is that there’s no cost and there aren’t any fees to use the app. You simply download the free app from the App Store and create a free account. Fetch makes Money via affiliate commissions paid by the brands that it partners with. On their app you take a picture of any and all grocery store receipts, including Costco, Walmart, Sam’s, gas stations, convenience stores and all restaurants you visit. Fetch doesn’t care where you shop and accepts receipts from any store., if you have a receipt, scan it and earn points! Scanning your receipt on the app, takes all of about 10 seconds and you receive your points immediately. Your receipts just can’t be any older than 14 calendar days and you can only scan 35 receipts over a 7-day period. Fetch will also have special offers from participating brands you already shop for, which is the best way to increase your points balance. I normally don’t plan my purchases based on the brands, but they do have them listed at the top of the Discover tab on the app. Another way to earn points is through the Huggies Rewards + Fetch program. So if you or a family member are buying diapers, it’s a great way to earn 5,000 Fetch Reward points for every $150 in Huggies purchases.

Lastly, you can also earn at least 2,000 points for every friend who signs up and scans at least one receipt with the app. Fetch gives you a minimum of 25 points per receipt that you scan, even if all you do is buy a $1 bottle of water (and get a receipt so you can take a picture of it) the points add up quick and before long you’ll be earning free gift cards!

As of July 2022, it has a 4.8/5 star rating from 2.4 million ratings in the App Store and is a fast-growing consumer loyalty app. Fetch Rewards marked a milestone of one billion receipts scanned! Good luck, have fun with the app and start earning and saving those free rewards to use now or for the upcoming holidays!

All of you wine-loving grandmas out there have to check out Vivino! It’s an app that helps you shop for a wine based on how it’s rated by other wine lovers. The best part is you can take a photo of the label while you’re shopping for wine and it will give you the Vivino rating and average price. You can read recent reviews where users will give you hints of the flavor profile too.

Here’s another way to use it: we often shop the “buy 6 and get 25% off” at the local grocery store. Then weeks later, we can’t remember which of the wines we previously purchased was “cheap” or one of the “good” wines. So we just pull out the app and scan the label to see if it might be a wine to save for a special occasion.

It also has “just for you” recommendations based on wines you’ve scanned or reviewed for others. You can find your friends on Vivino and make your own wish list. Whether you love red, white, or rosé, this app will help you choose wisely.

Cheers to you finding your best wine!
