5 Easy Ways To Teach Your Children/Grandchildren About Memorial Day

Memorial Day is celebrated on Monday, May 29, 2023 and is considered a federal holiday in the United States. On this day, we honor and mourn members of the military who have passed away while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Like many of you, I have had many people in my family: great uncles, grandfathers, my dad , my sister in law, friends and nephews that have served or are currently serving in the armed forces. I truly am grateful for their service for our country.

Here are 5 Easy ways to teach your children about Memorial Day and to connect them to generations past.

Create flag crafts and proudly fly an American flag

You can visit a veterans cemetery or war memorial together paying honor and respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice

You can make a Veterans day by bringing cookies or treats to a VA hospital. Be sure to call the hospital prior to visiting to see what their rules are about outside visitors. You can also have your child make a drawing, write a letter or send a care package to soldiers, marines, airman, sailor or coast guardsman actively serving. Go to doinggoodtogether.org to write positive message to someone in the armed forces.

Attend a local Memorial Day parade in your area. Teach your children to stand and clap for veterans marching past

Sing a few patriotic songs: America the beautiful, National anthem and the Pledge of Allegiance to name a few. Your kids should stand and place a hand over their heart while they sing them

These are some simple ways to teach kids how to honor our nation’s lost heroes.

However you choose to celebrate Memorial Day, I hope you enjoy your day and celebrate in one of the above ways with your children and/or grandchildren.

God bless the USA!
