How Does Wonder Keep Us Young and Open?

You’ll never find a rainbow if you’re looking down.

—Charlie Chaplin

Watch a toddler encounter a puddle. They don’t see an obstacle or an inconvenience. They see possibility, mystery, magic. They crouch down, fascinated. They touch the surface and watch ripples spread. They stomp and squeal at the splash. For them, a puddle is an entire universe worth exploring.

Now watch an adult encounter the same puddle. They see something to avoid, to step around, to complain about. The magic is gone, replaced by irritation and efficiency. We call this maturity, but what if it’s actually a kind of death?

Wonder is Love’s curiosity—the quality that keeps us engaged with life, open to surprise, capable of being moved by what we encounter. Children have it naturally. They approach the world with fresh eyes, asking “What is this?” and “Why?” and “What if?” They haven’t yet learned to be bored, jaded, or too sophisticated for amazement.

Then we grow up. We learn the names of things and mistake naming for knowing. We develop expertise and lose beginner’s mind. We become so focused on where we’re going that we stop noticing where we are. We trade wonder for certainty, curiosity for conclusions, openness for the comfort of already knowing.

The cost is enormous. Without wonder, Relationships become stale. We think we know our partner, so we stop being curious about them. We’ve heard our friend’s stories, so we stop listening deeply. We’ve categorized our colleague, so we stop seeing them freshly. The people in our lives become fixed in our minds, and we miss who they’re becoming.

Without wonder, we stop growing. Growth requires openness to what we don’t yet know, willingness to be surprised, capacity to have our assumptions challenged. When we lose wonder, we calcify. We become people who already know everything, which means we can learn nothing.

Reclaiming wonder doesn’t mean becoming childish. It means recovering the capacity to be genuinely curious, to approach familiar things with fresh attention, to let ourselves be amazed by what we’ve taken for granted. It means asking questions even when we think we know the answers. It means looking up instead of only down.

Try this: spend one day treating everything as if you’re encountering it for the first time. Really look at your partner’s face. Listen to your child’s voice as if you’ve never heard it. Notice the sky. Taste your food. Feel the water on your hands. Watch what happens when you bring that quality of attention to ordinary moments.

Wonder doesn’t just make life more interesting—it makes us more alive. It keeps us open, curious, and capable of being moved. It reminds us that we don’t know everything, that mystery remains, that life still holds surprises. That’s not naivety. That’s Wisdom.

This piece flows directly from the heart of my book, Humanity Rising: The Power of Love, written as a gentle reminder of what happens when we choose to meet the world with open hearts and deeper human connection.
