When Your Title Becomes Your Whole Identity And What to Do About It

What does it look like when your title becomes your whole identity?
How do you build a personal brand when you have been in engineering leadership for years?
And what do you actually do if every opportunity coming your way is a copy of the role you’re already in?

In this solo episode of From a Woman to a Leader, I share my personal take on my conversation this week with Chen Guter, CMO at Dig. We talked about personal branding for women in tech who were trained to let the work speak for itself, and what happens when you finally realize the work doesn’t speak.

I share a dinner party in Plano, Texas, where someone collapsed my entire identity into one word.
The three questions I use with every Coaching client to define a personal brand from scratch. Where Chen and I disagreed during our conversation and what I’d actually tell a coaching client about taking harsh feedback personally. And the four-year wait I had to break before I started this podcast.

If you’ve been thinking about how to build a personal brand on LinkedIn, how to position yourself for the next role, or how to get visibility at work without it feeling like self-promotion, this conversation is for you.
