Don’t wait ‘till you’re older to feel free

Improv sometimes gives me a reason to dress up and be whoever I want to be.

I was a painfully shy kid. I was scared of drama class and hated that I had to be in it.

And yet… I still ended up in the spotlight in other ways. Public speaking, interpreting languages, writing and publishing books…

But I didn’t try improv until 59. Musical improv at 62.

And it’s a whole lot of fun. We laugh a lot. I get out of my head for a while. It’s a break from everything. I’ve met such interesting people through it, and I even get to do it with my husband, which I never would have imagined years ago.

I’ve gotten bolder with age. Although I was pretty darn bold before, taking on projects and activities that were way over my head or that I was scared stiff of.

And yes, getting older can feel super freeing. But it’s not the only way to feel free.

I do wish I had leaned harder into my quirks earlier. I wish I had cared less about what people thought.

If you’re holding back, don’t wait until you’re older to try something that feels fun, even if it also feels a little scary.

What’s something you’ve been wanting to try but haven’t?
