We were walking through the Historic Center of Mexico City when we spotted Lady Tacos de Canasta and immediately knew we wanted to try her tacos… and film a reel.
Lady Tacos de Canasta has become something of an icon in CDMX. She’s known for her traditional tacos de canasta (basket tacos), but also for her story. Originally from Oaxaca, she started selling tacos on the street and went viral after being filmed calling out “¡Tacos, tacos!” in her unmistakable voice. Since then, she has become a symbol of resilience, visibility, and pride, especially within the LGBTQ+ community.
Her tacos are simple, classic, and deeply rooted in Mexican street food culture: chicharrón prensado, papa, frijol, adobo. Warm, soft, comforting. The kind of food you eat standing on a sidewalk while the city moves around you.
You’ll usually find her set up near the Zócalo or other busy central areas, often surrounded by locals, tourists, and people who specifically seek her out. We just happened to spot her while wandering, which made it even more special.
Mexico City is like that. You go out walking and you never know what moment is waiting for you.
Have you ever discovered someone unexpectedly while traveling who made the experience feel more real?
