Why the Healthcare System Treats Symptoms Instead of Healing

Why does modern healthcare often treat symptoms instead of addressing root causes?
In this episode of the ANEW Insight Podcast, Dr. Supatra Tovar sits down with nurse, Health innovator, and Human Sync co-founder Erik Nelson to explore the deeper issues inside modern healthcare protocols.
Early in his Nursing career, Erik experienced a moment that changed how he viewed the healthcare system. During night shifts in a hospital, he noticed a pattern: post-surgery patients wearing diabetic wristbands were routinely given cookies and soda, only to be prescribed insulin to control the resulting blood sugar spike. When he questioned the practice, the response was simple: patients need to eat, and insulin will handle it.
But the experience raised an important question: Are we managing disease instead of addressing the underlying causes of illness?
In this thought-provoking conversation, Dr. Tovar and Erik explore the tension between symptom management and root cause healing. They discuss how healthcare systems can unintentionally normalize practices that contradict long-term health, how clinicians navigate cognitive dissonance within institutional protocols, and why patient-centered care requires asking difficult questions.
This episode invites listeners to rethink the difference between treating symptoms and supporting true healing—and why curiosity and critical thinking matter in modern medicine.
In this episode you’ll learn:
• The pivotal moment that shifted Erik’s perspective as a nurse
• Why modern healthcare often focuses on symptom management
