Social isolation has severely impacted families and children. It’s time to update “Neighborhood Watch” because Americans are increasingly divided and angry, and families and children are suffering the consequences. Police forces have been weakened in many cities.
Stephanie Mann helped establish the national Neighborhood Watch program in the 1960s and co-authored the book, “Alternative to Fear: Guidelines for Safer Neighborhoods.” Today, many Americans feel isolated, lonely, and powerless. While Neighborhood Watch may seem passive, we now need our city leaders to promote and discuss Neighborhood Responsibility within our communities. When families feel safer, their mental and physical Health improves, and they can develop trusted Relationships, which are essential for maintaining freedom and a healthy, non-violent society.
Some neighborhoods have been overtaken by criminals and gangs. (400,000 kids join a gang every year at a cost of $655 billion a year.) Residents in these areas will need additional support from “Neighborhood Safety Experts,” who are trained and paid to unite neighbors. This approach offers numerous benefits for the city and its residents, including the potential to save millions of dollars.
