Vulnerability & Grief in front of 40K people

Large crowds don’t feel easy for me anymore, after Covid and the shootings. I won’t even go to movie theaters, but live music still pulls me in. My energy is soothed, the people watching is always good. Many girls were wearing flower crowns in their hair, per the song.

We’d seen the Lumineers open for U2 a few years ago. Bono was on a political rant that ruined the show, pulling us into the realities of crazy world rather than helping us forget for one night. The Lumineers stuck with us, the highlight of the show, creating a jam session filling the stadium with hope. Despite a crazy week, Jon and I made the trip to Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia to hear something to take our minds off of the world that feels worse than ever.

Wesley Schultz stepped out in a white suit over a Talking Heads tee, braids tucked under a hat.

The band moved through piano, massive percussion, and those deep, soulful beats that pull a crowd together — a mix of Bruce Springsteen grit, Rolling Stones swagger, and Talking Heads quirk.

Jeremiah Fraites wore his standard suspenders, his uniform making me second guess all the clothing in my closet. His black bowl hat seems to bring him to the stage, focusing on timing, beats and his bestie, Wesley.

Into the mic, Wesley thanked Jeremiah for being with him for 20 years. The band formed after Jeremiah’s older brother, who happened to be Wesley’s best friend, passed away when they were growing up in New Jersey. A friendship of sad circumstances, they eventually moved to Colorado to write and play music.

And then, towards the end he shared with his white suit jacket off that his brother had died two months ago suddenly at 39.

Singing the Talking Heads song when he had sung at his brothers wedding and subsequently his funeral, Wesley mentioned how he is using music to heal and makes sense when nothing does.

In midlife, we’ve been there. Things don’t make sense when good people get sick or smart people get fired or when amazing humans fall on hard times.

“This must be the place’ lyrics are about having enough time. But we don’t, do we?

Feet on the ground, head in the sky
It’s okay, I know nothing’s wrong, nothing

Hi yo, I got plenty of time
Hi yo, you got light in your eyes
And you’re standing here beside me
I Love the passing of time

To a crowd of over 40, 0000 people, I was reminded of the strength of a man on stage through his vulnerability. We danced, we swayed, we sipped, we laughed, we witnessed music we loved. We go really fucking quiet in the moment, knowing that feeling.

Lumineers Lessons:

  • You can share deep details without a ‘charge’. Sharing without politics or opinions is the simple way to bring people together. “I’m here with a heavy heart”.

  • Grief is massive, but life keeps moving; This show could have been cancelled, but Wesley used his community, his bandmates to keep going. He was choked up by the size of the crowd, the way we held him. Grief is hard alone

  • Healing looks different for everyone, but taking steps to get help is important — music for some, a job change, taking a vacation that’s been on hold, working with a therapist or making that doctor’s appointment for the nagging ailment.

  • Community matters. When life shifts, you may have to build it anew, like me. So many showed up and just as many didn’t. I found a new solid friend group near and far. Community is critical.

  • Vulnerability in public can change everything; it changed my weekend and will change my year.

Suffering alone feels unnecessary and too hard. That night was a reminder that we don’t have to carry everything by ourselves.

I see you, it’s hard.
