Swimming with sharks at 60 was not something I ever planned to do. But during a @virginvoyages cruise stop in Bimini, Bahamas, in May of 2024, Phil and I booked a snorkeling excursion that ended with us jumping into the ocean surrounded by over 20 nurse and reef sharks.
I was nervous when I saw them from the boat, but once in the water, I realized how calm and uninterested they were in us, and it turned into one of the most peaceful, almost meditative experiences of my life. I dove above them, in awe.
Then, a month ago, at 61, I found myself in Honeymoon Harbor, this time with my youngest, and also during a @virgivoyages cruise, hanging out with stingrays that brushed against us like friendly water puppies. We got to pet and hold them, and again, it was oddly calming.
Both times reminded me how often fear is just unfamiliarity. These particular animals are used to people and have been part of these eco-tours for decades. I wouldn’t do it in Florida, where I live, but in the Bahamas, where they are used to people, it felt safe, respectful, and it was definitely unforgettable.
Would you try either one?
