Physician Suicide, Grief, and Resources

“Medicine is, is on the one hand such a privilege and such a joy to be a doctor, but on the other hand, the, the personal costs can be too much.” -Dr. Corrigan

I want to bring to the forefront of discussion death by suicide, death of a physician by suicide. 400 per year alone in the United States. That number is more than likely under reported.

We are humans. We have emotions. We have fears, we grieve the loss of our patients, the self in each stage of our lives. When we can be a flawed human and embrace our weaknesses to make them better…to bring our authentic self to the patient physician encounter, that is where the real healing begins on both sides.

Too many physicians don’t get mental help that is needed for fear of losing their license or other professional repercussion.

Get help. You matter. Be an agent of change.

Sapna Shah-Haque Internal Medicine Physician

Dr. Sapna Shah-Haque, MD is a board certified Internal Medicine physician. She was born and raised in Kansas, and attended medical school at the University of Kansas [KU] School of Medicine. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at KU-Wichita as well. After experiencing burnout herself, and watching other physician colleagues burn out, it became a passion of hers to look into different aspects of burnout. While the system does need to change, as it is broken, this podcast is a way to reach physicians and possibly shed light on what is not an isolated situation.
