Photo by Zieben VH on Unsplash The trucking industry plays a crucial role in the transportation of goods across the United States, but it wouldn’t be possible without the efficient workforce of truck drivers. Bloggers venturing out as spring unfolds
April 24th, 2023

It’s been the second coldest April in history here in the Seattle area. And, then, there’s the rain, rain, rain. Even hail at times. Since I’m a photojournalist, I like to take photos of our state Capitol when the cherry blossoms are blooming. Many years it’s tricky to get a blue sky with the iconic building. This year, I tried three times to get some good photographs. I sell greeting cards with my photos at the Washington State Legislative Gift Center, so I’m always trying to get new, beautiful photos. One time I went about 6 p.m. and the light was fading with too many shadows. The... Continue Reading

Stop using $13 bicycle helmets sold at Walmart, the CPSC advises
March 15th, 2023

In addition to recalling products, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issues warnings about hazardous products. A recent warning from the agency is to immediately stop using black TureClos bicycle helmets. The helmets don’t comply with federal safety standards, the CPSC said in a statement. The helmets can fail to protect riders if a crash occurs, posing a head injury risk. The CPSC urges consumers to stop using the helmets, cut the straps off, and dispose of the helmets immediately. The bicycle helmets were sold online at www.walmart.com from March 2022 through November 2022. The... Continue Reading

Safety of e-bikes for kids comes under scrutiny
February 16th, 2023

Until this week, I hadn’t heard about a potential safety problem with electric bicycles or “e-bikes.” An article in The Washington Post, “A Child’s Death Prompts Questions About Brake Safety on E-bikes,” caught my attention. A lawsuit filed against Rad Power Bikes by the parents of a 12-year-old girl who was killed in 2021 in an e-bike accident claims the company’s bikes are “inappropriately” marketed to children and contain “multiple design defects,” according to The Post article. Molly Steinapir was riding behind her friend when the two girls were going down a steep hill... Continue Reading

Watch out for deceptive loan practices when you buy a used car
January 7th, 2023

Don’t get tricked into signing up for a high-cost loan when you buy a used car. Credit Acceptance Corp. misrepresented the cost of credit and turned the car-buying experience into a nightmare for many of its borrowers, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and New York Attorney General’s Office charged in a lawsuit. The borrowers faced unaffordable monthly payments, vehicle repossessions, and debt collection lawsuits. The agencies alleged the company harmed consumers by: Hiding the true cost of credit: The cost of credit was far higher than what borrowers are told. Setting up borrowers... Continue Reading

As inflation weary voters head to the polls Tuesday, oil companies are chortling all the way to the bank
November 8th, 2022

It’s one of the biggest frauds unleashed on the American public: high gas prices despite falling crude oil prices. As consumers prepare to vote, it’s often the high gas prices that are on their minds. Recently, I wrote about price gouging. I reported about one-third to half of the current inflation in the United States is being caused by big companies making excessive profits. It was difficult to get information on price gouging, but a friend send me a copy of a chart that’s gone viral. In April, John Bevins of director of research at the Economic Policy Institute, an economic policy think... Continue Reading
