My Quest For Health &Raquo; Notes To Self By Mark Obrien

I received an email last week. I don’t imagine I was its sole recipient. It was from Quest Diagnostics. The subject line was, “Last chance to shop our summer sale.” Summer sale? Wait! Medical testing is now a retail operation? Yep. The body of the email said this: Our summer sale ends soon. Regular testing is an important part of overall health. Don’t wait — now’s the time to get tested and save 20%. Sale includes tests ranging from overall to those that focus on your stress levels, metabolism, or health risks for certain chronic conditions. No promo code needed. Whether you’re... Continue Reading

It’s About Time &Raquo; Notes To Self By Mark Obrien

On last week’s Friendship Bench, Eric Zabiegalski led us in a fascinating exploration of what it means to — as is the title of his book — Unthink. During the conversation, Eric mentioned Iain McGilchrist’s notion of betweenness; that is, McGilchrist’s contention that we need to live between the increasingly over-dominant left hemispheres of our brains and the right hemispheres of our brains, which are losing influence as the brain’s natural regulative masters. And, McGilchrist argues, both are necessary for a fully meaningful view of the world. In his own words: If one had to encapsulate... Continue Reading

Why Are Kids Reading Less?

Why Are Kids Reading Less? &Raquo; Marc Joseph

According to UNICEF (United Nations Children’s Emergency Fund), only a third of 10-year-olds globally are able to read and understand a simple written story, which means that 64% are unable to cover the minimum proficiency in reading comprehension. This is up from 52% pre-pandemic. Obviously not going to school during the pandemic interfered with the student’s reading fluency which is fundamental for academic development because the reading you learn in second and third grade is crucial as students read to learn about other subjects as they make their way into later grades. Reading plays a... Continue Reading

Green With Stupefaction &Raquo; Notes To Self By Mark Obrien

On Thursday, June 14th of this year, I attended the CBIA 2023 Energy & Environment Conference. The EPA, Connecticut’s Department of Energy, NGOs, public utilities, law firms, environmental consulting firms, and other private enterprises were represented. Four themes were prevalent throughout: Green (without being defined) is good. Fossil fuels (without being defined) are bad. The billions of tax dollars available through the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act will fund myriad (green) energy-related programs. Decarbonization = efficiency. The audience, for the most part, was... Continue Reading

The Irish Pub And Grill &Raquo; Notes To Self By Mark Obrien

Your friend and mine, Dennis Pitocco, sent me this photo of a watering hole near where he and his wife, Ali, live in Tampa, Florida: People who think Irish pubs and grills are a dime a dozen are most likely correct. But they probably don’t know why there are so many or why they’re called pubs and grills. So, as a public service, I’m going to break it down for you. Start With the Pubs The reason there are so many Irish pubs is that drinking for Irishmen is an Olympic sport. Even the amateurs are pretty competitive. There is, for instance, the story of the Irishman who, while visiting the... Continue Reading

It Couldn’t Happen Here &Raquo; Notes To Self By Mark Obrien

I read a press release the other day saying W.C. Fields had been appointed President Biden’s Chief of Staff. When asked what his specific advice was for the President, Mr. Fields said, “Never give a sucker an even break or smarten up a chump.” As it turns out, that seems to have been translated into the President’s domestic policy on all fronts. Here are just four examples, the first two on energy. The first is from Robert Bryce from a post on Substack. The post is called, “The Iron Law Of Electricity Strikes Again As Vietnam Boosts Coal Burn”(hat tip to my friend, Jim Vinoski, for... Continue Reading

Why Divorce Is So Hard on Kids
June 21st, 2023
Why Divorce Is So Hard On Kids &Raquo; Marc Joseph

From 1900-1930, the divorce rate in the USA was 1.1 out of 1,000 Americans. In the 1970’s it was 4, while in the 1980’s it was 5. Baby Boomers became the most divorced generation in USA history. Luckily today in 2022, the rate has dropped to 2.3 per 1,000 Americans. Perhaps the Baby Boomers’ children did learn from the mistakes of their parents. But the impact on all of our kids is the same, no matter what generation experienced divorce in their family. Divorce is a difficult and emotional process for everyone involved, especially for children. When parents decide to end their marriage,... Continue Reading

Call Me &Raquo; Notes To Self By Mark Obrien

Why don’t people just call me? I’ll never understand. I wonder that quite often when something that would have been evident to a blindman wearing a blindfold is presented as something revelatory or epiphanic. The latest case in point is a piece from LinkedIn news called, “When office brainstorms go bust”. Here’s the gist: It turns out that solitude — not unstructured group brainstorming — is often the best starting point for big ideas. Experts tell The Wall Street Journal that the pitfalls of office life, which can include “blabbermouths with mediocre suggestions and introverts... Continue Reading
