In this episode of Cash Flow Confessions, Stephanie talks with Rachel Minion, founder of Rockstar and Moon, about the financial collapse that closed her Family’s printing business after 20 years, and the small side hustle that eventually became her real career.
Rachel’s family ran a printing company in Maryland through the 2010 recession. When the government shut down printing contracts across the board, her clients went from paying in 30 days, to 60, to 90… to not paying at all. One of their biggest clients, Ritz Camera, went bankrupt. With revenue gone and no way to keep the business running, Rachel and her family had to close a company they’d built for two decades.
What came next is the part most people don’t talk about. Rachel lost her home, got turned down for job after job, and started a small marketing agency just to make ends meet. That side hustle, Rockstar and Moon, kept growing quietly in the background, even after Rachel landed what looked like her dream job running marketing for a division of Ticketmaster.
Then the pandemic hit. Another round of layoffs followed. And that’s when Rachel finally had the push she needed to go all in on the business she’d been building on the side for years.
