I’m here to gently (and stylishly) disagree if you think skirts are only for the warmer weather. One of my favorite fashion myths to bust is that clothing is seasonal. Sure, some wool and thicker things won’t work for summer, but there are many ways to wear skirts in winter. Even summer skirts. Wanna see?
Quote of the day: “If you do not bend, you will break. The adaptable prevail. Determined but flexible.” James Clear
My crew and I are showing ways to wear skirts in winter that are practical, cozy, and most importantly, fun. And they even include color. Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean we have to only wear dark colors.
Valerie, my mom, and I each styled winter skirts in very different ways, proving that there’s no single “right” formula.
Just tons of options.
If you don’t Love skirts, may I suggest that you give them a shot? The right ones are usually more comfy than pants because there’s really only 1 big fit factor…the waist.

Before we dive into the outfits, let’s talk mindset for a second. Skirts in winter aren’t about suffering for style. They’re about smart layering, intentional fabrics, and footwear that does the heavy lifting.
Here’s what makes skirts surprisingly winter‑friendly:
Once you stop thinking of skirts as “bare legs required,” everything changes.

Valerie’s look is a perfect example of how a casual blazer can instantly turn a skirt into a cold‑weather outfit.
She styled her skirt with a bold jacket that brings warmth and personality. This is key. In winter, your jacket isn’t just something you throw on. Instead, it’s part of the outfit.
Valerie’s jacket adds color, shape, and polish.
Then come the boots. Boots are non‑negotiable when it comes to winter skirts, and Valerie’s choice grounds the outfit. They visually anchor the look, add warmth, and keep everything practical for walking around on cold days.
Style tip: If your skirt feels too lightweight for winter, don’t give up on it, just add weight up top and layers under it. Jackets, scarves, and textured layers change everything.

Details:
-Valerie’s necklace is handcrafted from silver bars retrieved from The Neustra Senora de Atocha that went down in the Florida Keys in 1622. It is framed by two dolphins, and I included a close-up of it in today’s email (another great reason to get my emails…you get extras).
-She also shared that this jacket is from her working days. Another great reason not to purge all of your “work clothes” when you retire.
-And the scarf thrown over the shoulder and held in place with a brooch is part of her signature styling lately.

This is a casual way to wear skirts in winter because it’s cozy, unexpected, and very real-life.
I paired my skirt with a sweatshirt. Because sweatshirts aren’t just for jeans and joggers.
When styled intentionally, they bring a relaxed, modern vibe to skirts, especially in winter when comfort matters.
Granted, my sweatshirt was DIYed with hand-knit sleeves, but any sweatshirt would work.
For this outfit, the sweatshirt is relatively long on my upper body, so by pairing it with a shorter skirt, I kept the proportions in thirds.
I also believe in bright colors…yes, even in winter.
Style tip: Try a half‑tee or thin layering piece underneath a sweater or sweatshirt to add a layer without bulk. This zebra mesh halftee is a perfect example.

-My new boots are still on incredible sale still available in 2 sizes. They are the epitome of my style, don’t you think?
-I added a brooch at the neckline, and brought in the multi colors with my earrings (on Amazon)
-The colorful bee as a bag charm brings a fun yellow and black color to my feather purse.

Charlotte’s outfit is a masterclass in classic winter dressing.
She paired her skirt with a sweater, which is probably the most intuitive winter match, but the magic really happens with the tall boots.
Tall boots add warmth, elegance, and a strong vertical line that works beautifully with skirts in winter. And the fact that they are suede makes them even more perfect.
This combination feels timeless but not boring. It’s the kind of outfit you can wear to lunch, a casual gathering, or even a winter event, depending on the accessories.
Style tip: Don’t worry about matching your boots exactly to your skirt. Contrast often makes the outfit more interesting.

Details:
-Even though my mom’s skirt is a “summer skirt,” being very lightweight and flowy, it works here with the extra layers.
-I love how my mom wore a ruffle dickey at the sweater neckline. She found hers while thrifting, but they are on Amazon, too.
-My mom has worn this sweater when we talked about different lengths of tops.

When thinking about ways to wear skirts in winter, layering is your best friend.
Now, don’t write me off because I live in Arizona. I have used these tricks and was the queen of layering when we lived in Denver.
I don’t miss living in the cold, but I do remember how to keep warm.
Try these ideas:
Warmth doesn’t have to be obvious to be effective.

Can you really wear skirts in winter without freezing?
Absolutely. The key is layering. Tights (especially fleece-lined), tall boots, sweaters, sweatshirts, and jackets all work together to keep you warm. When styled intentionally, skirts can be just as cozy as pants.
What type of skirts are best for winter weather?
Midi skirts are often the easiest because they offer more coverage and pair well with boots. Skirts made from heavier fabrics such as knits, pleats, wool blends, or lined materials tend to hold warmth better, but don’t count out your lighter skirts because they can still work with the right layers.
Are tights necessary when wearing skirts in winter?
Not always, but most of the time, they make winter skirts more comfortable and practical. Tights add warmth, help create a smooth visual line, and expand how often you can wear your skirts during colder months.
Another option would be knee-high socks, if you don’t like tights.
What shoes work best with winter skirts?
Boots are your best friend. Ankle booties are great for everyday outfits, while tall boots add warmth and polish. Even mid-calf or combat boots can work depending on your style.
It’s no different than how we all wore different heights of boots with culottes.
How do I keep a winter skirt outfit from looking bulky?
We have talked about 3 strategies for this theme. But truly, my goal is to hope that you stop stressing about looking slimmer or taller or any “er.” It’s much more freeing to wear what you like and have fun with your clothes.
YOUR SIZE IS THE LEAST INTERESTING THING ABOUT YOU.
The biggest takeaway here? Skirts don’t suddenly stop working just because the temperature drops. With the right layers, boots, and attitude, they’re just as wearable, and sometimes even more interesting during winter.
I think we have shown there are endless ways to wear skirts in winter that fit your Lifestyle and personality.
So before you shove those skirts to the back of the closet, try one winter tweak. Add tights. Swap the sandals for boots. Throw on a jacket.
You might be surprised how comfy these outfits can be, and pretty soon you’ll wear them all the time.
Let’s just remember that style doesn’t hibernate. And neither do skirts.
