When most women think about wearing a jumpsuit in winter, the idea usually gets dismissed pretty quickly. Who wants the hassle of taking down a jumpsuit with layers on over it to go to the bathroom? I get it.
Quote of the day: “Go at it boldly, and you’ll find unexpected forces closing round you and coming to your aid.” Basil King
But just like so many style issues we’ve encountered in the past, the moment you start looking at it creatively is the moment you gain Clarity.
Because the secret to wearing a jumpsuit in winter isn’t about piling on bulky layers over the top. Instead, it’s about what you layer underneath.
That small shift in thinking changes everything.
Instead of treating your jumpsuit like a one-season wonder, it becomes a blank canvas. It’s the idea that winter jumpsuits don’t feel impractical at all because you can do so much with them.

The best part is you get a daily dose of positive energy.
Let’s break down the secrets.

This is the biggest mindset shift of all.
A jumpsuit isn’t an “all or nothing” garment. It’s more like a sleeveless dress or a pair of overalls. It needs something underneath to really shine in colder weather.
Once you think of your jumpsuit as a top layer, winter styling becomes easy.
Instead of asking, “How do I wear this in winter?”
Ask, “What can I put under this?”
For example, in these examples I’ve layered:
-mint bomber jacket under a jumpsuit (bomber jacket worn over maxi)
-heart blouse under a boilersuit (original article)
-lime green sweater (that even has a white t-shirt under it) under a pink jumpsuit
-llama crew sweater under a boilersuit (original article)
-orchid turtleneck under snakeskin jumpsuit
-brown long sleeve t-shirt under snakeskin jumpsuit (original article)
That’s where the magic lives.

When it comes to wearing a jumpsuit in winter, bulk is not always your best friend. You want warmth without stiffness, coziness without feeling like you can’t move.
This is why thin, fitted layers work best underneath. Even though it’s thin, it can still be warm. Think silk long undies or those man-made materials that keep the heat in.
This is where Halftees, layering tees, and fitted knits really earn their keep. They might not be your standalone options for wintertime, but they are champions when layering.
Insider detail: I work with Halftees and thus can offer you a discount. Use code JTouch20.
One of my favorite tricks for winter jumpsuits is playing with texture instead of thickness.
Style tip: Mixing textures is a stylist’s go-to…it adds depth and makes an outfit feel intentional.
Texture tricks the eye and makes the outfit look fabulous instead of thrown together.
This is especially helpful if your jumpsuit is simple or solid-colored. Texture underneath keeps it from feeling flat.

Not every under-layer has to scream “winter.”
Sometimes a sheer sleeve, lace sleeve, or lightweight blouse is all you need, especially if the jumpsuit itself is made of a heavier fabric.
The beauty of wearing a jumpsuit in winter is that your outer layers can do some of the work too. While the last thing you want is to have to remove everything for a bathroom break, you can find ways to make this work.
For example:
-Style a vest over your jumpsuit and tack it in place with safety pins. Then it’s one with the jumpsuit.
-Use a wrap or large scarf over your shoulders. It can stay in place during your bathroom break.
Your under-layer doesn’t have to carry all the warmth on its own…it can be a group project.

Yes, I wore belts in a couple of these outfits.
No, you absolutely don’t have to.
That’s an important distinction.
Some jumpsuits look fantastic without any waist emphasis at all, especially when layered underneath. The fabric often falls differently once there’s another layer involved, creating shape on its own.
If you do want definition, but your jumpsuit doesn’t have beltloops and you don’t want the hassle of taking off a belt during your bathroom break:
And if you want none of it? That’s fine too.

This might be my favorite secret.
The color you wear under a jumpsuit can completely change its personality.
When you’re wearing a jumpsuit in winter, the color underneath is like a secret weapon because it can peek out at the sleeves or neckline.
This is also a fantastic way to rewear the same jumpsuit multiple times without it looking repetitive.

While the focus here is layering underneath, footwear still matters, especially in winter.
Boots are the obvious choice, but let’s not forget that socks and tights can help.
Style tip: Don’t think that cropped jumpsuits won’t work. Consider it an opportunity to show off your footwear more.
Your footwear helps balance the layers happening above. You can keep it simple to put the focus on the top half, or add more fun with your shoes and boots.

When you’re wearing a jumpsuit in winter, accessories can do a lot of the heavy lifting.
A scarf, hat, statement necklace, or even a pair of bold glasses can shift the entire mood of the outfit while adding warmth and personality.
Accessories also help your jumpsuit feel seasonally appropriate…and it’s not just your jewelry. Even your purse can give off a winter vibe.
Accessories are the finishing touch that says this was styled on purpose, not just thrown on because it was cold.
In reality, I haven’t been the hugest lover of jumpsuits at any season. But in following my own guidelines to be open to new things, I’ve been pushing myself out of my comfort zone and trying them.
And you know what? I do Love jumpsuits because they remind me of dresses in that they are a beautiful piece of material from top to bottom.
For winter, jumpsuits can feel unexpected. Not unlike how I’ve shown a maxi dress styled for winter.
They can also feel creative. Because layering is the name of the game, which creates a million ways to change it up.
And once you unlock the secret of layering underneath, they become one of the most versatile pieces in your closet.
So let’s all join together and challenge ourselves by wearing a jumpsuit in winter. Because winter isn’t the problem with this difficulty. Once we change our mindset, you’ll find a bunch of interesting ways to
bring that jumpsuit out for a snow day.
