Simple Festive Outfit Inspiration Yet No Glitter Or Sequins

Tresi made a request about styling a festive outfit without the obligatory sparkle and glitter. While that isn’t my style at this time of my life, I understand that everyone is different. And I realize that a festive outfit can be a combination of other elements like texture, color, or prints.
So I thought it would be fun to dig through our older photos that would be fantastic for festive outfits to give you inspiration.

Quote of the day: “Doubt kills more dreams than failure ever will.” Suzy Kassem

While these outfits were not styled for a festive event per se, the foundation is the key. You can always add the required layering elements or extras that you need to make them “you.”

The advantage of using these textures, prints, and colors as part of your festive outfits is that the same clothing can be worn almost all year long. Thus, it’s good for your wallet and for sustainability.

1. Chunky Knits

I know chunky knits don’t immediately scream “festive outfit,” but let me talk you into it. There is something inherently luxurious about texture, and a big, beautiful knit sweater provides so much visual interest on its own.

The trick is to treat your knitwear intentionally. Maybe that means with the colors you prefer for the festivities, or maybe with a scarf and beanie set that adds your type of sass.

Chunky knits also photograph beautifully because they add dimension. So if you’re taking holiday photos or heading to a tree-lighting ceremony, this is the kind of festive outfit that is perfect for any event.

Pro tip: The advantage of chunky knits is how you can easily layer UNDER them with no one being the wiser. A fleece-lined t-shirt, you betcha. A flannel shirt, absolutely. Even 2 turtlenecks work wonderfully.

The biggest advice I can give is to stop worrying about looking bigger in your chunky knits. Let’s change the mindset that smaller is better and stop worrying about any type of “er.”

2. Velvet

Velvet is the perfect reminder that you can feel glamorous without glitter. It’s plush, soft, dressy, and visually rich, which is everything a festive outfit aims to be.

We’ve styled velvet jackets casually in the past, yet you can dress them up easily, too.

Pro tip: Velvet plays well with others. Layer it with lace, wool, denim, or even more velvet. There is no such thing as textural overload.

3. Corduroy: The Unsung Holiday Hero

Corduroy is one of those textures people forget about for festive dressing, but once you use it intentionally, you’ll wonder why it isn’t on every “holiday outfit ideas” list.

To make corduroy feel festive instead of everyday, think about holiday colors and pair it with contrasting textures.

Corduroy also has a cozy, nostalgic feel to it, which makes it perfect for more laid-back gatherings. That’s not to say you couldn’t dress it up with a satin dress or furry sweater.

4. Faux Fur

And we can’t talk about a festive outfit without giving a little Love to faux fur. If there were ever a texture that said “holiday elegance” without relying on glitter, this is it.

If you aren’t a fan of an abundance of faux fur, then faux fur scarves or trim can be the perfect solution.

Think of it as the winter equivalent of a power accessory.

5. Plaid

Plaid is the pattern of the season, and it’s practically built into our holiday DNA. Make them bold, make them subtle, but plaid can be the foundation of your festive outfit in so many ways.

While we typically see red plaid more during the holidays, don’t count out the other colors. If your plaid doesn’t have your favorite holiday color in it, then pair it with your fave color.

6. Colors

Color is one of the most powerful tools we have in our style toolbox, and when it comes to creating a festive outfit, you cannot go wrong with red, burgundy, green, silver, or ivory. Or heck, combine them all.

If you’re someone who feels overwhelmed by festive dressing, this is the place to start.
A red sweater with ivory pants? Done.
An ivory dress with a green coat? Gorgeous.
A silver blouse under a burgundy cardigan? Perfection.

As usual, these pieces work long past the season, so you’re not buying a “one month a year” wardrobe.

Festive Outfits Don’t Mean Sparkly (Unless You Want It To)

At the end of the day, a festive outfit is simply one that helps you celebrate the season while staying true to your personality.

So if sequins make your heart sing, wear them proudly!

But if you prefer something more classic, there are so many beautiful ways to embrace holiday style without glitter or glam.

Let texture shine. It’s okay to let the pattern do the talking. The color can make the statement. And most importantly, let your joy AND smile be the most festive thing you wear.
