One of the biggest misconceptions about winter style is that warmth automatically means bulk. Or for many women, they worry that furry coats and vests are too much.
The Thrifty 6 group prompt was faux fur, and I decided my crew would showcase faux fur accessories.
Quote of the day: “The quality of your life comes down to the thoughts that you think on a regular basis.” Kerwin Rae
And the keyword here is accessories. They’re one of my favorite ways to add texture, interest, and fun to an outfit.
In the past, I’ve shared about:
–faux fur scarves
–different varieties of furry clothing
–ways to style a teddy coat
Any form of faux fur seems an obvious, fabulous detail in the winter, so today I wanted to focus on faux fur accessories to bring that winter vibe into our outfits.
I also included an FAQ section towards the end of the post, if you don’t want to read through all of the thoughts and ideas. This was suggested by ChatGPT to make it easier for AI to extract the information so it can be shared with others who are searching for this knowledge.
Before we dive into the outfits, let’s talk about why faux fur accessories are such a smart choice.
First, faux fur adds instant texture. Winter outfits often lean heavily on knits, denim, and wool, all of which I Love but sometimes can look flat when everything is matte. Faux fur brings in a softness and a 3-dimensional aspect that catches the eye.
Second, they add visual warmth. Even if the temperature doesn’t technically change, faux fur reads cozy, which is half the battle in winter styling.
And finally, faux fur accessories allow you to add to an outfit without feeling like you’re going over the top (not that I believe there is an over the top, but many women do).
Accessories can be a bold addition or just a subtle extra…you choose.
Now let’s give a huge ovation to my husband, who stepped in for Lesley when she hurt her ankle.

I realize that most men don’t wear faux fur accessories, but I thought this collar would be a cool addition to his look.
Rob added it over his handknit vest, paired with a patterned shirt and jeans. What I love about this look is how the fur collar adds structure rather than softness.
Without the faux fur collar, the vest-and-shirt combination would still be great, but I like how the collar takes it up a notch.
And yes, I could have pinned it in place, but I didn’t.
Style tip: Faux fur collars are great over knitwear, denim jackets, or even coats you already own. Think of them as winter’s answer to a great scarf.
And sometimes you can deconstruct an item that has a faux fur collar to make it reusable.

Details:
-I knit this vest ages ago for Rob. There wasn’t enough of the brown print yarn for the entire vest, so I added in the black. It’s a common theme throughout my knitting journey, because I tend to think backwards when planning a project.
-Notice his boots are two-toned.

Faux fur belts aren’t something you see often, which is why I grabbed this one when thrifting years ago. No, I don’t wear it often, but since it doesn’t take up much space in my closet, it’s nice to have.
I’m wearing this faux fur belt layered over a blazer. The blazer has structure and clean lines, while the faux fur belt softens it just enough.
Plus, I think the belt works well with the elbow patches and collar.
Even if you don’t want a belt for cinching your waist, it can be a stylish element that works for you in other ways.
Style tip: Try any type of belt over blazers, long cardigans, or even coats. Even shorter toppers can benefit.

Details:
-I added a floral barette/pin to the buckle portion of my belt.
-All kinds of accents are used in this outfit: color with my sweater and pins, metallic with my earrings and necklace, as well as animal print with my footwear and the scarf on my purse.
-This blazer has been with me for over 12 years because I used to wear it at the office.

My mom’s look might be my favorite example of how faux fur accessories can reflect personality.
She’s wearing a faux fur hat, which in and of itself is cool and wonderful.
But what really makes it special is the brooch pinned onto it. This is such a great reminder that accessories don’t live in isolation. You can layer them, personalize them, and make them uniquely yours.
The faux fur hat adds warmth (obviously), but it also adds presence. It frames her face, ties into the rich textures of her embroidered coat, and feels intentional.
And the brooch? It elevates the hat from “warm winter accessory” to “styled statement.”
Style tip: If you don’t have a lot of brooches to decorate your faux fur accessories, try using some of your earrings.

Details:
-My mom wore this coat when we talked about 40 degree weather.
-While the red purse “matches” the embroidery, it really adds a colorful element.
-OTK boots are not just for young girls.

If there’s one takeaway from all three looks, it’s this: intention matters more than quantity.
Here are a few guidelines I swear by:
Winter style doesn’t have to mean hiding under layers or defaulting to the same safe pieces. Faux fur accessories can be a great way to express your interest and personality.
Because style should always feel like you, with a bit of warmth in the winter.
Faux fur scarves, hats, and bag charms are the easiest places to start. They add warmth and texture without committing to a full faux fur coat, making them more versatile for everyday winter outfits.
Yes. Faux fur feels modern when paired with equally modern pieces. Or bring out a dated clothing item and easily upgrade it to current times with one of these faux fur accessories.
Neutral shades like black, brown, cream, and gray are the most wearable, but other colors can give an outfit that sense of whimsy.
Absolutely. Faux fur accessories can elevate casual looks like jeans, sweaters, and boots. Adding just one faux fur piece instantly makes an everyday outfit feel styled and intentional.
Accessories are a smart way to get the warmth and texture of faux fur without extra layers. A faux fur collar or hat adds insulation exactly where you need it, without overwhelming your silhouette.
Yes. Faux fur accents, such as collars layered over knitwear or outerwear, can appear stylish and modern on men. Heck, faux fur hats are perfect if a guy is missing some hair.
Faux fur works best when it feels personal, and if treated like a statement accessory, it becomes a fun, stylish winter detail rather than a trend you’re trying too hard to follow.

Because the fashion and textile industry can be a major contributor to landfills and other environmental pollution, we decided that the mission of this group is to focus on second-hand items.

“I bought this preloved plushy faux fur leopard coat about 7 years ago and I still wear it every winter. There is something perfectly timeless about a furry leopard coat, don’t you think? I layered it over a newly thrifted burgundy floral print dress paired with an even newer thrifted scarf in coordinating colors. My necklaces and earrings were also purchased at second hand markets. My tall brown Doc Martens were purchased new but they are still thrifty considering I have been wearing them for nearly 30 years!”

“I hate the feeling of faux fur on my skin. The prickling, the irritation, the caressing. And the idea of having to wear something pre-loved made of faux fur? No, sorry, not for me. And I really did try. Because a few years ago I bought a vest, of all things, pre-loved. But I don’t even have a photo of it. I think it went straight in the trash. So what to do? And yes, these days, so much is possible with AI! Because I simply asked ChatGPT to complete my pre-loved outfit with a pre-loved faux fur coat. So I’m kind of skipping school, but then again, not! The trousers and blouse are pre-loved.”

“This is a vintage faux mink coat from the 1960’s or possibly even the 50’s; it’s made in the traditional furrier style with all the internal trims and ties. I had to check really carefully before I bought it in case it was real (it’s definitely not).
It’s just like the opulent blond minks that film stars wore back in the day– so glamorous!
There aren’t many occasions to wear a coat like this, it’s either far too ostentatious or the weather’s just not cold enough.
So, when Emma picked ‘Faux Fur’ as the T6 theme for January, I couldn’t wait to be a little minx in my faux mink!”

“I am not a faux fur (let alone real fur) person, though I don’t mind it at all on other people. So this was a challenging prompt for me this month! But I was able to dig out my one thing with faux fur: a pair of cozy red slippers with brown faux fur trim (bought new from Lands End). Inspired by seeing a work-from-home pandemic era photo of myself in a normal pencil skirt with these slippers, I decided to style another staying-home-warm-and-cozy winter outfit with them, matching the red color with an old pair of thrifted jeans and the brown in a brown top + cardigan. The giraffe print scarf and gold pendant necklace are also thrift purchases.”

“I love faux fur coats and have around ten (yes, I’m addicted!). But I can always be tempted by another one, like this burgundy jacket by Jayley that I found on Vinted. It has three quarter length sleeves, which I think looks good with a contrasting top underneath. I’ve teamed it with burgundy trousers and a gold blouse by Monsoon. I finished off the look with my well-used gold bag and trainers, and a flower ring from a charity shop.”
