How to Use Belt Decor to Make Your Accessories More Creative

One of my themes lately is the idea that sometimes it’s not about buying a new outfit. It’s about changing the details of the outfit you already own. And maybe you have noticed that I’ve been having fun experimenting with belt decor.

Quote of the day: “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” Michael Jordan

While I have been having fun using belt decor this year, this specific article came about when Mireille said she’d join me in recreating outfits from the street style looks I have saved yet hadn’t gotten around to recreating for my New 60 Outfits.

So that means you also need to click over to see what fabulous ideas Mireille styled on her site.

Inspiration For Belt Decor

However, most of my inspiration photos were winter-based, except for the shot above. It made me think that we could have fun with showcasing ideas for belt decor.

Belts are usually thought of as practical. They hold up pants, cinch dresses, and create shape. But that doesn’t mean they have to stop there. What if we decorate them?

And as I explain over and over, we do not need to “copy” an inspirational idea. The concept is to take the notion and use what you have to create something original and fun.

I hope you join my email Family. It’s the place where I share things even before creating on my blog. It’s also my space for fun and positive content. In addition, you also get my free eBook when you sign up, but that’s not the best part.
The best part is being part of my community, where we inspire and lift each other up.

Why I Love Belt Decor

One of the reasons I enjoy styling accessories in unusual ways is that it instantly creates personality. Anyone can wear a black belt. But adding something unexpected to it? That’s the kind of detail that makes people look twice.

It’s also a fabulous way to:

  • Use accessories creatively
  • Add interest without layering more clothing (truly a big one for me in our summer heat)
  • Change the vibe of an outfit

It feels playful. And at this stage of the game, I believe that fashion should have moments of play.

Belts are an underrated detail, and I’ve talked about them many times. If you need more inspiration, check out some of my other articles:

Experimenting With Belt Decor

This isn’t my first round of accessorizing belts.

Brooches As Belt Decor
Original post-What Brooches are Used For

1. Brooches on an Elastic Belt

One of my favorite experiments was pinning brooches all over a wide elastic belt. The sparkle and dimension turned the belt into a statement piece instead of just a basic accessory.

What I loved most was the contrast and bling.

Stylist tip: The 2 matching leaf blings are actually earrings. So don’t just limit yourself to brooches when playing this game.

It also became a wonderful way to actually wear brooches instead of leaving them tucked away in a jewelry box.
Because, as I’ve shared in my emails, brooches are a huge trend for 2026.

Insider tip: Having your brooches out in the open helps you remember to wear them. I recently bought this pinboard and Love it.

Using A Necklace And Earrings For Belt Decor
Original post-How to Style Wide Belts

2. Necklaces and Earrings Added to a Belt

Another time, I attached jewelry directly to an elastic belt by wrapping a necklace around it and holding the chain in place with some earrings. I feel like they mirrored the silver buckle with more architectural embellishments.

My New Belt Decor Experiments

So I wanted to come up with some newer ideas for this post. In reality, the ideas are endless as long as you use your imagination and go play in your closet with the things from your jewelry box.

3-Trinkets Attached to an Obi Belt

For one outfit, I clipped little trinkets onto an obi belt. These trinkets are hanging with my brooches and have lobster clasps. Sometimes I add them to necklaces or on anything where they can hang wonderfully.

Stylist tip: While some women don’t wear belts because of the horizontal line, this type of belt decor adds a vertical element instead.

4-Adding an Earring to a Leather Belt

This idea came from simply noticing the existing holes in a leather belt.
I have these earrings that are just too heavy for my ears, so I have them hanging with my brooches.

I love this idea, but the exact example did not work fabulously this day. I was afraid the earring would come off…maybe if there were more overlap on the belt and if I could have used a hole on the side instead of the front buckle area.

Stylist tip: If you can get this idea to work, then it could be perfect for that single earring that is missing its mate.

5-Wrapping a Fabric Bracelet Through the Buckle Area

This idea is actually 2 ideas in one. I used one of my lobster clasp trinkets, but then thought the belt needed more.

Here is the TT video showing exactly how this belt decor came about.

I threaded a fabric bracelet through the buckle area of the belt, and it completely transformed the look. The softness of the fabric against the structured belt created that wonderful style dichotomy I’m always talking about.

6-Adding a Necklace to a Chain Belt

I even created an FB video about this idea if you like a tutorial.

All I did was take this pearl necklace and weave it through the chain belt for added belt decor.

Stylist tip: You could even do this with a clasped bracelet or anklet.

Why These Little Details Matter

I think details like this are what truly make style personal.
You’re not copying trends per se, but combining things you already own into something different and unique.

Sometimes the outfits that get the most compliments are the ones where you experimented rather than followed the rules.
It makes sense because that’s when you stand out, not looking like everyone else.

The Fun of Styling Outside the “Rules”

What I love most about belt decor is that there really aren’t rules.

You can get a ton of ideas from Mireille’s post and my photos. So go have fun and create your own belt decor.

And isn’t that the fun of style as we get older? We stop worrying so much about whether something is “supposed” to be worn a certain way and start asking whether it brings us joy.
