How To Style Deep Purple Outfits With Variety

Recently, Dori suggested that I post about how to style deep purple outfits. I consider this jewel-toned shade very versatile, maybe like a neutral when you give it the chance. My crew is showing only 3 options on how to wear deep purple outfits, but as we know, there are many, many more ideas if you go play in your closet.

Quote of the day: “It doesn’t matter where you are coming from. All that matters is where you are going.” Brian Tracy

And because color play is our Love language around here, each of us approached purple from a different direction:

  • Lesley mixed deep purple with an earthy color- rust.
  • Charlotte paired deep purple with a soft neutral – ivory.
  • Jodie went bold with the brights – hot pink.

I believe that color combinations are the easiest way to change up your wardrobe and outfits. We’ve played with a multitude of different colors this way:
-Heck, we’ve styled purple with different clothing elements
–Green
–Olive green
–Aqua
–Any color using my color recipe
What other colors should we tackle?

One way to start styling any color differently is to change your mindset about the color. Many times, we get into ruts about which other colors to pair with it.
So, for deep purple outfits, maybe think of it as the fun cousin of navy? Whatever you’d pair with navy, try it with your purple items.

Don’t have any purple items? Well, let’s change that:

The best part is you get a daily dose of positive energy.

Lesley: Deep Purple + Earthy Rust

If you’re hesitant about wearing bold colors, Lesley’s deep purple outfit is the perfect gateway. She took her deep purple dress (you’ve seen it before, styled for Mardi Gras) and grounded it beautifully with an earthy color…rust.

Rust is one of those under-appreciated colors. It brings warmth and an organic feel to any combination, yet we don’t see it much. When Lesley paired her deep purple dress with rust shorts, it instantly created a palette that feels sophisticated and very unique.

What I especially love is how she played with shape and proportion, as well as how she added in multicolored items to tie it all together.

Details:

-Lesley just tied up the front of her dress to expose the rust shorts. Especially with a knit, flowy dress like this, you can reconfigure it in a multitude of ways.
-The scarf on her purse, her necklace, and her shoes all incorporate a variety of other colors that make this outfit more like a piece of artwork.

Charlotte: Deep Purple + Soft Neutrals

Charlotte opted for the idea of soft neutrals for her deep purple outfit. In reality, I consider her top a very pale yellow; it’s so pale that you could call it a neutral. It shows almost like an alabaster color.

It’s not just the color but the silhouette that makes my mom’s outfit so different. The ivory keeps the purple from feeling heavy, and the draped neckline brings movement and airiness to the outfit.

Pro tip: I wasn’t sure I loved the top pulled all the way down as in these photos…it reminded me of the frump line discussed recently. Therefore, in the group shots, I gathered it up around her waist.
You can see both proportions and decide which you prefer yourself.
There is no right or wrong…just options.

Details:

-These tan flats are a perfect addition to this look.
-Notice my mom’s button bracelet. She made that years ago (I have one too), and it’s such a cool way to use up a bunch of buttons.
-My mom used a gold brooch in the “v” of her shirt to keep the folds in place and add bling.

Jodie: Deep Purple + Hot Pink

You know I couldn’t resist styling deep purple the bright-and-bold way. Color is my mood booster, and honestly, my way of expressing joy.
So naturally, I paired my deep purple velvet top with vibrant hot pink pants, and YES, the combination makes me ridiculously happy.

I love this velvet deep purple top, but at first glance, it’s boxy, and the sleeves don’t stay put very well.
That’s why I put together 2 videos showing how I origami-ed it
–Part 1-where I took 1 sleeve and created a rosette
–Part 2-where I used a brooch to ruche in the material.
BTW, if you appreciate these videos, please like and share.

Pro tip: With a bold color combination, you might think it’s better to play it safe with neutral accessories. But adding in more boldness can make the outfit even better.

Details:

-Instead of a matching purse or neutral one, I grabbed a large, colorful tote (preloved from my friend who just passed away) to give the outfit more of a casual flair.
I believe even our choice of purse can change the vibe of the look. For example, if I wore silver heels and carried a silver beaded clutch, I could be ready for a gala.
-I’m wearing one of my headscarves around my ponytail to make the back view more pleasing.

Ways To Wear Deep Purple Outfits

What This Shows About Deep Purple Outfits

One of the biggest takeaways from this shoot is that deep purple is far more versatile than people think. It plays well with:

  • Earth tones
  • Soft neutrals
  • Bright, punchy colors
  • Metallics
  • Pastels
  • Other jewel tones
  • Prints!

You can dress it up, dress it down, mix it for color-blocking, or use it as the grounding shade in your outfit. It’s rich without being overwhelming and bold without being loud.

And if you’re someone who sticks to navy or black because they “go with everything,” consider giving deep purple a try. It’s just as wearable, but definitely more interesting.

Final Thoughts

I think the 3 of us have shown a great variety of deep purple outfits. The beauty of this shade is that it can morph to reflect your personality and pair with everything else in your closet.

So next time you pass something purple on the rack, don’t walk by. Pick it up. Play with it. Hold it against your neutrals, your colors, your textures, your prints.
Chances are, it’ll surprise you in the best way.
