Fashionable Ties: 3 Unexpected Ways to Wear Men’s Ties

It’s no surprise that I Love taking pieces that aren’t supposed to work and making them fabulous anyway. Especially when those pieces already exist in our closets. Or our partner’s closets. On the other hand, maybe they are a steal at the secondhand store.

Quote of the day: “What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.” Zig Ziglar

Which brings me to today’s topic: styling fashionable ties in unique ways.

Men’s ties are one of those items that you can find for a steal (or you can raid a guy’s closet), yet rarely reach for anymore. Office dress codes have relaxed, ties feel formal, and honestly, most of them just sit there collecting dust. But that doesn’t mean they’re done.

With a little creativity and thinking outside the box, you can create masterpieces with these beautiful items.

Today I’m showing three completely unexpected ways to wear men’s ties. None of which involves wearing them as men usually do.

The best part is you get a daily dose of positive energy.

Why Men’s Ties Deserve a Second Life

Before we dive into the outfits, let’s talk about why fashionable ties are such a hidden gem.

Men’s ties are:

  • Already beautifully patterned
  • Often made with quality fabrics
  • Long, flexible, and easy to manipulate

They’re essentially built-in accessories. And if you take my motto of being the boss of your clothes and apply that to these fashionable ties, you’ll have a gem on your hands.

When you repurpose something unexpected, the result always feels more intentional and definitely unique.
And you’ll have built new brain pathways by creating something new out of something old.

Charlotte: Men’s Tie as a Necklace

Charlotte’s look is the perfect example of how a man’s tie can become a statement necklace. I’ve been seeing this idea on my social media and even tried it out recently in this video.

Insider tip: If you love the idea but don’t want to put in the effort to create it, I found some already designed for you to purchase on Etsy.
BTW, it can be beneficial to peruse the offerings on Etsy because they can be reworked in many ways, and you may get some fabulous ideas to fashion your own.

The result? The tie hangs almost like a pendant, sitting beautifully at the center of her outfit.

Insider tip: I found that the “tie necklace” can be heavy on a flexible necklace, so I like to wear it on a rigid necklace.

Details:

-The brooch on the tie necklace may be off-center (my fault. I created this for my mom to wear), but I love the 2 extra brooches at the bottom portion too.
-A blush pink purse lightens up the overall look and takes away the overall matchy-matchy effect.

Jodie: Men’s Tie as a Belt

This isn’t the first time I’ve worn a men’s tie as a belt. I had fun with a purple tie worn over a white dress and lilac vest.
I’ve also combined two men’s ties to make more of an obi belt. While I sewed them together (as shown in this video), you could easily use a pin or brooch to hold them instead.

I had just found this pink gemstone belt buckle and decided to see if I could thread the men’s tie through it.

When we talk about fashionable ties, this is exactly what I mean: making them playful, unexpected, and wearable in everyday life.

Details:

-I’m wearing this sheer tulle dress (styled over a white dress in the summer) over a lacey turtleneck and my “nun” skirt.
-Chokers aren’t the biggest trend, but I like this velvet one worn over the lace.
-Bag charms, on the other hand, are a huge trend, and I combined both a scarf origami-ed into a flower plus a heart charm on this fuzzy purse.

Rob: Fashionable Tie as an Ascot

Who said a tie has to be worn only 1 way? This is a fantastic reminder that ties don’t have to be stiff or formal.

Rob styled his tie as an ascot, worn at the V of his neck instead of knotted tightly. It acts like a scarf and gives a pop of color to the look near his face.

An ascot-style tie gives off that effortlessly chic vibe. It’s very similar to Lesley’s look recently, which is where I got the idea.

This is especially great for men who have a ton of ties lying around but don’t want the formality of one hanging from their neck anymore.

Details:

-Layering is just as wonderful for men. Rob is wearing a button-down shirt (made by my mom from leftover material from her shirt that she wore years ago) under his sweater.
-Rob’s wearing a pair of his Cariuma sneakers. I love the company’s sustainability ethics and the fun colors for both men and women. I do NOT recommend these for wide feet.
-This red “tie” turned into an ascot is the tie Rob wore for our wedding 22 years ago.

How to Start Styling Your Own Fashionable Ties

Find some old ties lying around or grab them at a steal when thrifting.

  1. Start with 3–5 ties you love visually–maybe it’s the color or print
  2. Forget how they’re “supposed” to be worn
  3. Test them as belts, necklaces, wraps, or neckwear
  4. Add brooches, buckles, or chains
  5. Wear them confidently

The key is experimentation. Some ideas will work beautifully. Others won’t. That’s okay. Style is play.

AND, by playing in your closet this way, you are creating new brain pathways. Yay for our brain Health.

Final Thoughts: Fashionable Ties at Any Age

One of my favorite things about fashion at this stage of life is freedom. Freedom to break rules, reuse pieces, and wear things simply because they make us smile.

Men’s ties may seem like an unlikely hero, but as you’ve seen, they can become necklaces, belts, and relaxed neckwear with just a little creativity.

So before you donate them, try styling them.

Because your style is evolving, and if you can change it up, then you’ve made progress.

And that, in my opinion, never goes out of style.
