Since I’ve been wearing athleisure outfits this summer, I thought I’d share my 3 favorite ideas. Rob and I have been taking a free Yogalates class at Optum Community Center, which is a combination of Yoga and Pilates.
It’s part of our workout philosophy, which believes in the idea of being kinder and gentler to our bodies.
Quote of the day: “A river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence.” James N Watkins
I believe that a healthy Lifestyle involves movement, including balance, strength, and flexibility. It’s the core behind feeling good as well as being able to perform normal daily activities, including climbing stairs (without the handrail), getting up out of a chair (without pushing yourself up), as well as bending down to put on shoes, socks, and even your pants.
And this idea shouldn’t be thought about only at the New Year when we talk about goals and resolutions. This is part of daily living at its best.
So today I’m sharing my athleisure outfits that I wear to my Yogalates class in the summer. And because our class is indoors and has AC, my tops are all about layering options.
Now, I know some women think of activewear as purely functional, but my philosophy is that clothing should always make you feel confident, playful, and stylish, no matter the setting. That includes workout classes!
Full disclosure: I used to be one of those women who just wore “whatever” to work out in because I was going to be sweating in it.
Until I realized that what you wear impacts how you feel. Even in the gym or workout class.
Insider tip: I find many of my athleisure items through thrifting, Amazon, or at Old Navy. I don’t spend an arm and a leg on it.
Now these outfits are very similar to the ones for walking the dog. There’s no reason I can’t be cute for all the activities.
My emails are my way to share fun and positive content with you from all of the sites I visit during the week. Sure, you also get my free eBook when you sign up, but that’s not the best part.
The best part is you get a daily dose of positive energy.

These are often called 2-in-1 shorts or layered active shorts, and they’ve become one of my favorite pieces for athleisure outfits.
Insider tip: A personal preference is finding the built-in shorts that extend below the shorts. Then it’s obvious that I’m covered.
But FYI, there are versions where the under shorts are the same color, so you don’t notice them.
You could certainly create your own 2-in-1 shorts by layering a pair of athleisure wear shorts over a pair of biker shorts.
Or if you want them longer, consider purchasing the men’s options…no one will know they were marketed to the guys.

The biker shorts are perfect for any type of workout. They’re snug, stretchy, and very practical for Yogalates because nothing moves out of place.
Insider tip: To balance the fitted bottoms, I tend to grab a bigger, more voluminous top and leave it untucked. Not always, but more times than naught.
These types of shorts come in a variety of lengths. And remember to check measurements, because if they look short on the models, it could be because the models are really tall.
Another option is 7/8 leggings, which are shorter than full-length leggings if you are looking for more coverage.
Or Amazon has many longer biker shorts.

Now here’s where athleisure meets style. An active skirt (or “skort”) gives the illusion that you’re dressed up a touch more, while the hidden shorts keep everything practical.
Insider tip: Especially for these types of classes, the A-line skirts give you more movement. I also think they feel more modern and modest.
You can find these activewear skirts in a variety of lengths. And the detail I Love especially for walking the dog is a pocket in the shorts that will hold my phone.

For Yogalates, the classroom can be warm from the class before it, or chilly because the AC is on full blast. That means I have layers:
This way, I have options no matter the temperature because, as I’ve learned first-hand, it’s uncomfortable when you’re too hot or too cold.
Insider tip: Sports bras have come a long way. My favorite details are the ones that zip up the front. I also like the longline sports bras. And FYI, for our gentler workouts, I size up so they aren’t so tight. I’m not running and bouncing, so I don’t need to constrict the girls.
Since the class itself is done barefoot, the only time I wear shoes is getting to and from the center. That means my motto is easy on, easy off.
My favorite options:
The goal isn’t fashion perfection, but you’d better believe I still enjoy coordinating them with my outfit.

Even though you see young girls wearing athleisure everywhere, your versions can be different yet still stylish. It’s not about trying to look younger or trendier. It’s about making activewear work for your lifestyle and body now.
A few reminders:
Insider tip: Yes, even athleisure items can be altered to fit better. Especially if your top half is short, and the t-shirts are too long. It’s worth the Money even though you’re just working out in it.
I believe that the sweet spot for athleisure outfits in summer is clothing that works with your body and lifestyle, while also making you smile when you catch a glimpse of yourself in the mirror.
Other workout inspiration:
–Activewear skirts worn for everyday
–Compression leggings
–Workout clothes for older women
So yes, even in Retirement, even in a workout class, I’m still finding ways to have fun with fashion. And you can too.
Because style doesn’t retire, it just evolves.
