GETTING STARTED WITH FULL OR PART-TIME Travel

Heather Markel, Best Selling Author, TEDx Speaker, Traveler, Full Time Travel and Business Coach

So, you have this YOLO dream to travel full-time or part-time, but you might be stuck at how to get started, or, whether you can possibly afford it. And, a few of you might wonder if the idea, which sounds like boundless amounts of fun, is only for people who are slightly nuts.

Let’s take the last point first. Are you nuts if you want to travel full or part-time mid-career?

The average global Retirement age is around 64, but in the USA, if you were born in the 60s, you’re more likely to retire around 67.

The average global life expectancy is around 74.

While statistics on the following areas vary by a few years depending on which website you visit, you can certainly understand that an average of less than 10 years to enjoy the retirement you worked so hard to create is, well, nuts!

So, faced with two nutty concepts, why not pick the one that creates more life fulfillment?

How do you afford to travel full or part-time?

That brings up the obvious answer, how on earth do you afford the travel Lifestyle? Great question!

When I quit my job in 2018, remote work wasn’t a thing. You can thank the pandemic for giving you more options to keep your Employment, and also travel full or part-time.

But, what if you were recently laid off? Or, what if you want to quit your job?

If you’re mid-career, and you’ve done a great job creating a savings padding, now may be the perfect time to do some longer-term travel than vacations allowed you. You can create a business, take on project work, or, realign your finances to take what’s certainly a well-deserved break.

A simple tip for you to play with is that unlike “real life”, travel life allows you to be in control of what you spend.

So, look at your available finances (A), pick a number of months you’d like to travel (B), and divide A by B. There’s a real idea of how much you can spend, monthly. There are a few more steps in translating that to a travel lifestyle plan, but that tip should at least get you thinking about this more seriously than you did five minutes ago. Yup, that’s a real number to start from, not just a pipe dream!

How do you get started with full or part-time travel?

OK, let’s say that you’re excitement is percolating at this potential lifestyle shift. Even if you realize you could afford the lifestyle, at least for a specific period of time, the question is, where do you start?

While the answer is slightly different for each of us because of factors like:

  • Your available budget
  • How long you want to travel
  • Whether you’re single or have a family
  • Whether you own or rent your home

A really great place to start is by considering your answers to a few key questions:

  1. Are you a planner or go-with-the-flow?
  2. Will you travel alone or in a group, or with someone?
  3. When do you want to leave?

Next, make a list of your top ten dream destinations, and rank them in order of preference. Try a long vacation – if you’re over 40, you may have accrued a month or more, so, instead of taking a week or two, try taking 4 weeks to one of those destinations. It’s a great way to see if you enjoy what the lifestyle is like the longer you’re there.

I know, this seems ridiculously simple. That’s the point. If you really want to try out the travel lifestyle, it’s that simple.
