Attract the Right Job Or Clientele:
A recent Washington Post article encourages today’s blog story, ‘Will you downsize your career to do what generates enthusiasm?’ The report contains many lessons from both corporate and entrepreneurial perspectives. Our blog concerns how we monitor our careers, holding our highest level of integrity as we search for meaning and, potentially, some excitement about what we do.
Two remarks in the article caught my attention that is worthy of everyone’s consideration:
Career Wealth
According to the Post, the protagonist took a bold step to express his concerns and then stepped away. He was an executive vice president of operations for a well known media business. As a co-founder and stock option holder, he may have become a millionaire one day. Upon realizing all the factors contributing to his wealth and that of others, he reconsidered his values and priorities and how he may put them to better use in a new career that he finds satisfying.
Career Downsizing for Fulfillment
Surprisingly, the gentleman decided to become a certified barista trainer for a well-known company located inside a grocery store. He must arrive at the store early to earn approximately minimum wage. The new position is a far cry from where he was before! In his case, values and priorities are everything; coupling the thought with doing what he loves, he is thrilled with his new career!
My Story
A big smile came to me as the same principles were and still are essential in my career with many faces. My pinned tweet states, ‘Honesty is the Soul of Sales and all else that you do!’ After eleven years of corporate shenanigans, putting it politely, I decided that entrepreneurship was a better route. Whether or not I could make oodles of Money was not the issue; it was whether I could look in the mirror with a smile, knowing I continue to work my way with integrity and find fulfillment on multiple levels.
Upon becoming an entrepreneur, I never saw myself as an author or a speaker; I planned to assist corporate teams in improving their sales. Our job is to live life to the fullest, including selecting at least one community to support, not just with money but with empowering members by sharing our experiences. Doing so is one of the more fulfilling moments of our lives. Even better, we can learn from one another with an open mindset.
The irony is that we cannot predict the future or know what will come. But once we find what we enjoy doing, it motivates us to continue. But there is one differentiator between those who do well and those who quit, typically within their first year. We must admit that jealousy often reigns large for negativity to pour on us. The issue is whether we will endure the floods of negativity or gradually swim past the ugly tide to enjoy a new sunny day.
When we love what we do, the motivation will typically be to continue trying, testing new ideas, and making improvements for additional offers of opportunity. Altogether, we can succeed in whatever we set our minds to achieve when we focus on our career to do what generates enthusiasm.
Sometimes it is necessary to analyze your career status during your private time. Should you feel frustrated, enthusiasm declining, and the lack of feeling included in team meetings, the time may be today to uncover how you may fix the issues within or outside your current Employment.
A good starting point is to consider what you enjoy most outside work, fulfilling hobbies, and the people you enjoy connecting with. By creating a comprehensive picture of what intrigues you most, you may figure out a better route for your future career. Figure out what else you may add to your future vision that will embolden what you now desire to accomplish.
Once it appears that you have everything laid out for a new working environment, begin planning the strategies you need to line up, including how you will go about marketing, branding, and building the business. Most importantly, ensure you have the funds to do everything to avoid going bankrupt. Should funds be an issue, consider the next best option of working for a company whose culture may mirror what you seek, such as diversity, equity, and inclusion. Lastly, no matter which route you select, perfection does not exist. It is one’s job to grow by learning what is missing and determining how to improve upon the matter.
In Conclusion: Downsize Your Career to Do What Generates Enthusiasm
Ultimately, the 3P’s that matter most – ‘Purpose, Passion, and Perseverance’ will enable you to make your dreams come true. Know that it may be a more challenging path as an entrepreneur because you alone have the responsibility for making what you do a success. On the other hand, taking a less comprehensive position can create much doubt unless you put in the effort to find the point of fulfillment and generate the enthusiasm you seek.
