How Do You Respond to Discriminatory Behaviors?
Most people likely experience discriminatory behaviors toward them in their lifetime. Some people choose to up the ante provoking more severe discrimination toward others. And some people will learn from the experiences to help others overcome their difficulties and ensure they are worthy of their dreams.
Of course, there is a big difference between public hatred and workplace discrimination. The goal of turning hatred around requires a comprehensive, collaborative effort among the public to set things right. On the one hand, it is up to the individual to speak up in the workplace when favoritism works against them. However, if the public were to join forces for fair and equitable treatment in the workplace, we could change for the better.
Long ago, upon seeking a job as a sales representative, six interviews were necessary to sell an unknown brand of copier against the biggest and the best on the market. Why? I was a pioneer female applicant seen as unworthy of the job.
Finally, after adhering to all of the requirements spewed out by the Director of Sales, he could not think of another reason not to hire me. So he lamented in his tone while saying, ‘If only I knew someone who also knows you and can verify your work, I would hire you!’
‘Listen carefully to the words spoken.’
Feeling Sorry for Myself
It was a useless task seeking the position of a salesperson, but being a secretary would not bring in the necessary funds for our family.
A Mindset Change Will Change the Outcome
I needed some fun that weekend, so I invited good friends for dinner and conversation. They saw my interviewing stories as mind-boggling but entertaining for them. So upon asking me what was new with my job search, I explained the latest. And then a surprise of a lifetime took hold.
My friend said, ‘That Director of Sales once worked for my father in the banking industry, and the four of us broke into hearty laughter! The odds of the connection were so teeny that it was almost difficult to believe.
The Follow-Up Call
On Monday morning, I called the Sales Director to remind him of his last statement that he would hire me upon knowing someone who knows him. He admitted recalling the declaration. I then asked, ‘Does this name sound familiar to you?’
Dead silence took over. I then mustered up the courage to ask if the Director preferred that I begin to work the following Monday at 8:00 or 9:00 a.m. And that is how I respond to discriminatory behavior. I call people out on their specific verbiage to prove my point.
Build Impressive Networks
As we build our networks, it is essential to connect with those who are authentic, consistent with their values and priorities, and retain a commitment to lend a helping hand when others ask, or they see a need. No one person has all the answers, but when we realize who may and they are willing to assist, we can achieve anything we desire. But the ultimate plan is to embrace our setbacks, the motivation to continue and inspire, and the willingness to persevere with all we have.

One excellent sales technique is to repeat the essential words someone relays to you and ask for the underlying meaning. Doing so demonstrates that you are listening, heeding their words, and ready to act. Moreover, you know to ask if there is an issue to address upon witnessing unusual facial expressions or gestures. Putting the other person on the spot often has them relent to find a more satisfactory solution.
Once we experience a small victory, we feel the exponential motivation to continue. We do need to accept that setbacks will slam us on occasion. But after overcoming one such experience, we become aware of the necessary steps to respond to discriminatory behaviors. Over time, we can make our mark.
Better yet, it is devising a plan to share with others how they may similarly approach offensive efforts toward them. By sharing your experiences, the following can occur:
– You are likely to receive support from those who understand the situation.
– You will more likely contribute to building a similar-minded network to help one another grow.
– You may become an authority on disarming topics to help others achieve their desires, thereby attracting business never anticipated but greatly appreciated.
After either a terrible or an excellent outcome, verify what you may have done to encourage it. Figure out how to avoid the worst and expand on the best with future encounters. Wasting time on anger and frustration accomplishes nothing except to get you to quit. But quitting achieves nothing except building up a treasure trove of regret.
The better route is to build up a better treasure trove of lessons you learn along the way and how you apply them to achieve your goals. In your effort, you will also experience personal growth for others to admire and eventually enjoy becoming known as a leader in your field.

The experience turns bullying and discriminatory behaviors into humor upon knowing how to fix the situation. But when it comes to public issues, it isn’t funny, but we need to remedy the problem (s). The best step is to envision yourself in the shoes of those experiencing discrimination of the worst kind and how you might feel about it. Then work on a comprehensive plan for finding a better solution.
