Elderhood: Wisdom

Wisdom! This it a difficult subject. How does one talk about wisdom?

Looking up the definition says: the quality of having experience, knowledge and good judgment, the quality of being wise. I have to say, there is a different wisdom that I gained. Knowing that if I do something, create something based on a past experience, I cannot go beyond what I created in the past. In a way, if I use that definition of wisdom, even though my action may be wise, can I go beyond what has been created in the past according to what I’ve learned? No, I can’t.

We are living at a major change point in this time. Systems are beginning to fall apart, like Buckminster Fuller predicted about 50 years ago. Right now, they are just cracking and I am wondering what is going to happen to those systems in the next six or 12 months. I am also aware that as humanity, there is a change that is being asked of us. Learning more, becoming more open to new things, is a requirement.

As I see it, wisdom can still be grounded in past experiences, as long as I’m open for new, as long as I’m open to expand on the old. Am I willing to say: okay, based on this, what else is possible? For instance, we discover new possibilities like the ability to heal ourselves based on epigenetic. There are new awarenesses I like to explore. I’m asking new questions. I’m gaining awarenesses which I don’t necessarily always heed.

Over the past year or two, I have been exploring, listening to workshops and interviews on Gaia.  There are different people  I have come to respect and where I feel they are approaching things from a, for me, new perspective.

My ideas about elderhood have begun to shift. I really dove into the subject at the beginning of the year, but the more I’m diving into it, the more I am contemplating it, I am realizing new perspectives. There are certain awarenesses that as a sudden pop in. For instance, at one point, I ‘heard’ the word ‘modern elderhood’. What the heck does that mean? I am still exploring it. It’s not that I have an answer. I may expand on the old notion. I may start a new conversation about what modern elderhood may mean today. But that doesn’t mean that I know what it means. It still is an exploration.

As I said, I am becoming aware of new, different perspectives. Is that awareness wisdom? It is wisdom grounded in the openness to something new. From my perspective, I would say yes. That wisdom is looking through the lens of past experience while being open to something completely new. And is that how we evolve, how we move forward.

I invite you to contemplate that for yourself. Where are You with it? If you have an idea, leave a comment.

Corinna Stoeffl Mentor for Conscious Living

As a Mentor for Conscious Living, I emphasize awareness, presence, and alignment as guiding principles for intentional living. My mission is to support people in navigating this stage of life with purpose and grace—not just for personal growth, but as a meaningful contribution to the world.

Drawing from a rich tapestry of life experiences and a deep connection with nature, I offer a space where you can authentically explore and express yourself.

I invite you to join me in reimagining elderhood—not as a time of retreat, but as an opportunity for growth, contribution, and meaningful connection. Together, we can explore questions such as:

  • How is the role of elders evolving in today's world?
  • What unique wisdom can we offer in addressing contemporary challenges?
  • How can we honor past traditions while embracing present opportunities?

What if we could live in a world where kindness, non-judgment, contribution, and joy were the norm? Where we considered the impact of our choices on all and desired to create more for people, nature, and the earth. What if we actively created a future based on these ideas in pragmatic ways? Would that be a world you’d want to live in too?
