‘Good. I’m Glad He’s Dead’ &Raquo; Eec8346C Dbd2 4B1C 84C7 De689904Ff80 1024X1024 1Robert Mueller, Donald Trump, and the Death of Decency

by Mark M. Bello

By now, you have heard that Robert Mueller, a decorated Marine, lifelong public servant, former FBI Director, and special prosecutor, has passed away. When Donald Trump heard the news, he posted these words:

“Good, I’m glad he’s dead,”

I’d like to say this is a new low for Trump, but it’s not. It’s more of the same. When it comes to our current president, we are no longer debating policy; we are confronting the absence of character or class.

We have a leadership crisis in this country, a self-inflicted wound that has taken us to war and caused damage to the soul of America.

The Contrast

Robert Mueller literally bled for America.

Vietnam. Purple Heart. Bronze Star, he spent decades prosecuting criminals, fighting terrorism, and leading the FBI through the chaos of 9/11. He didn’t tweet. He didn’t grandstand. He didn’t whine.

He served.

Donald Trump inherited wealth, gamed systems, proudly avoided taxes, bankrupted companies, lied, stole, cheated, and built a brand on self-promotion, grievance, and division. And when the system he’s always bent to his will pushed back and properly investigated him, he couldn’t dispute the facts. So, what did he do?

He attacked the investigators.

Even in death.

A Lie That Won’t Die

In his post, Trump also claimed that Mueller “hurt innocent people.”

That’s not just false, it’s upside down.

The Mueller investigation:

  • Secured indictments and convictions
  • Documented extensive foreign interference in a U.S. election
  • Laid out evidence of obstruction of justice
  • Followed Department of Justice rules—even when those rules protected Trump from indictment

Mueller didn’t “hurt innocent people.” He followed the law so carefully that he refused to overstep it—even when doing so might have satisfied half the country.

That’s not corruption.

That’s discipline.

Who Actually Got Hurt?

Let’s talk about innocence and guilt in Trump’s America.

Under Trump’s leadership and influence:

  • Families were separated as a matter of policy
  • Truth became negotiable, replaced by “alternative facts.”
  • Public trust in elections and the rule of law is systematically undermined.
  • Political rage is cultivated, not calmed.
  • Violence, threats, and intimidation crept from the margins toward the mainstream.
  • Our leaders consistently attack the melting pot that makes this country unique.

The Trump presidency will be remembered for chaos, instability, injustice, cruelty, deception, and inhumanity.

Projection as a Strategy

Why did Trump post those awful words? His attack on Mueller isn’t about Mueller. It’s about rewriting his story:

  • Investigations into his wrongful conduct are “witch hunts.”
  • Holding him accountable becomes “persecution.”
  • Public servants who seek to uphold the law are “the enemy of the people.”
  • And Trump? Well . . . he’s recasts himself as the victim.

This is not some routine deflection tactic. It is a lifelong blueprint for how he treats others, operates his companies, and runs the country.

The Real Divide

This is not a political distinction between Democrats and Republicans, although Trump has had a profound impact on the death of decency in the GOP.

This is something far more basic:

  • Service vs. self-interest
  • Duty vs. ego
  • Law vs. loyalty

Mueller represents a system where the law restrains power. Trump represents a system where power tries to crush the law. So when Donald Trump says Robert Mueller “hurt innocent people,” understand what you’re hearing.

It isn’t truth or evidence. You’re hearing the whining of a bitter, vindictive man-child who has spent a lifetime avoiding accountability. In contrast, Mueller spent his career enforcing that very same accountability.

These two men could not be more different. To those who defend Trump or argue that his service is, somehow, equivalent to or more consequential than Mueller’s, I say that the damage Trump has done to our country goes far beyond one disgraceful comment about the dead.

It goes to our soul.

Rest in peace, national hero. May your memory be for a blessing.

Bob Gatty Author, Podcaster, Blogger

For many years, Bob Gatty worked as a writer, editor, and communications consultant, based on the Washington, DC area with a focus on government and politics. He began at The Pittsburgh Courier, an African American weekly, covering crime and the courts. His salary was $55 per week before moving on to two local Pennsylvania dailies. At age 24, he began reporting for United Press International covering state politics in Pennsylvania and then New Jersey, where he was UPI’s state capitol bureau in Trenton.

Tempted by the allure of Washington, DC and big-time politics, at age 29 Bob became press secretary and chief of staff for two Congressmen – first Republican Edwin B. Forsythe, and then Democrat James J. Florio, who later became governor of New Jersey and until his recent death was a frequent podcast guest and co-host of Bob’s NFN Radio News podcast (now called Lean to the Left).

After seven years on Capitol Hill, Bob opened a communications business in Washington, first providing political media consulting to candidates and then freelance Washington coverage for business and trade magazines, plus creative communications services for trade and professional associations, including social media. This work involved articles and analyses of key governmental developments affecting businesses, such as the food and Health industries, retailing, and the environment.

His work as a communications consultant to trade and professional associations included launching and editing association publications, providing website content and social media assistance, and covering conferences and conventions.

Bob retired from G-Net Strategic Communications in 2016 and moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, where he launched his blog site, first called Not Fake News, now known as Lean to the Left.

Hijacked Nation
