Why Founders (and I) Struggle With Eye Contact

What’s Inside

  • The posture mistakes even pros fall into

  • Why body language can undercut your story

  • 3 quick fixes to keep attention on you, not your chair

They say the cobbler’s son has no shoes. For me, that showed up in a recent podcast recording.

Watching the playback, I caught myself fidgeting, shifting in my chair, dropping eye contact and slumping. My guest probably didn’t notice, but I did. And I cringed.

The irony? These are the same mistakes I coach founders and investors to avoid when pitching, talking to the press or showing up on Zoom. This time, I wasn’t practicing what I preach.

And that’s the reality: it’s tough to always be “on.” I forgot my cues: sit straight, look at the camera, stay present.

It reminded me of a founder I once trained who sat sideways during a Zoom call. Their answers were strong, but the posture signaled distraction. If an investor or journalist had been on the other end, they would have noticed. This founder had already raised Money, but I couldn’t imagine how if this was their go-to presence on calls.

Here’s the point: you can have strong words, but if your body language tells a different story, you’ll lose the room.

Posture, presence and poise matter whether you’re meeting with a VC or the media. Ignore them, and your credibility takes the hit.

Advice for Founders on Digital Calls

🔶 Plant your feet, sit tall, and remove all distractions.

🔶 Keep your camera at eye level.

🔶 Practice stillness: gesture with purpose, but cut the fidgeting.

That’s your Media Shot for this week. Make yours count.

I work with founders and investors to sharpen pitch decks, prep for media interviews and build stronger stories for customers and backers. If that’s on your plate, let’s talk.
