Hi everyone. Today you’re going to learn about a disease that afflicts millions of people around the world. In fact, in the United States alone, it is estimated that 20 million individuals may have this condition. I’m speaking about the eye disease known as macular degeneration, sometimes simply referred to as MacD. As you’ll soon learn, major strides are been made in improving the quality of life for those who have MacD.. and in related areas, too. And there is much reason to hope that things will get even better in the future!
In this episode of Health Care on the Horizon, you’ll learn about such things as (1) who tends to have MacD or be at greater risk for it, (2) the two main types of MacD, (3) what you can do to help prevent or delay the onset of MacD, and (4) advances that have and are likely to continue to be made in tackling this low-vision disease. You’ll also learn where you can get help if you or someone you know has MacD.
To help us with all this, we’ve brought on an expert on macular degeneration. She’s Dawn Prall.
Dawn Prall is the founder and executive director of The Support Sight Foundation and creator of the MyMacDLife podcast. Dawn is a high-energy executive with more than 30 years’ experience in healthcare and non-profit management… with an outstanding track record of fundraising, collaboration, and patient advocacy. Dawn is a nationally recognized patient advocate in MacD. In the last decade, she has garnered a reputation within the ophthalmology, vision research, and low-vision fields as a positive influence.
A champion for individuals and families whose lives are affected every day by MacD, Dawn actively participates on various patient advocacy councils, vision research funding groups, Congressional testimony, Medicare/Medicaid advocacy groups, and similar efforts.
