No Kings, No Lies: Trump’s Broken Promises Are Why Millions Are Marching Today &Raquo; Screen Shot 2026 03 28 At 11.39.47 Am 1 Scaled
No kings. Broken promises. Here’s why.

From Promises to War—America Pushes Back

By Bob Gatty

Across the United States today, millions of Americans are taking to the streets in what organizers are calling “No Kings” rallies—a powerful, unmistakable rejection of authoritarianism and a demand for accountability.

They march because something fundamental feels broken.

They march because the gap between what Donald Trump promised and what he has delivered is no longer spin—it’s reality.

And they march because the consequences are no longer abstract; they’ve hit home with a vengeance.

They are measured in eroded democratic norms, broken trust, and now—American lives are being wasted in a new, useless war.

From “America First” to Another War

Trump promised to end “endless wars.”

He said he would bring American troops home.

He said he would stop wasting lives and treasure in foreign conflicts.

Instead, the United States is now entangled in a dangerous and escalating conflict with Iran.

American personnel have already been killed and injured, at least 12 more reported killed today.

Families are grieving.

Others are waiting for news that no Family should ever have to receive.

This is not what was promised.

This is not “America First.”

This is the same cycle—reckless escalation followed by human cost—that Trump once condemned.

“Drain the Swamp” — Or Refill It?

Trump ran as the outsider who would clean up Washington.

Instead, he stocked his administration with insiders, donors, lobbyists, and billionaires—the very power structure he railed against.

The swamp wasn’t drained.

It was redecorated.

Fiscal Responsibility? Not Even Close

He promised to eliminate the national debt.

Instead, trillions were added.

Deficits soared—even before crisis spending.

For a movement that claims fiscal discipline, the numbers tell a very different story.

“Hire the Best People” — Then Fire Them

Trump promised to hire the best.

What followed was chaos:

  • Record turnover
  • Constant firings
  • Public infighting
  • A revolving door of advisers

You can’t run a government like a reality show and expect stable results.

“Law and Order” — Except When It Applies to Him

Trump branded himself as the law-and-order president.

Yet his tenure and aftermath have been marked by investigations, legal battles, and attacks on the very institutions he claimed to defend.

You cannot claim to stand for the rule of law while undermining it.

Transparency — Except When It Matters

He promised transparency.

But withheld tax returns.

Clashed with oversight.

Obscured key decisions.

Transparency isn’t a slogan—it’s a standard.

And it wasn’t met.

Why Millions Are Marching Today

The “No Kings” rallies aren’t about partisanship alone.

They’re about something deeper:

  • A rejection of unchecked power
  • A defense of democratic norms
  • A demand for truth over propaganda

Because Americans understand something fundamental:

We don’t elect kings.

We elect leaders who are accountable to the people.

This Is the Cost of Broken Promises

This moment didn’t happen overnight.

It was built on:

  • Promises made for applause
  • Policies made without foresight
  • Decisions made without accountability

And now, the consequences are here:

  • Democratic institutions under strain
  • Public trust shattered
  • American lives on the line in yet another conflict

The Bottom Line

The people in the streets today are sending a message:

We remember what was promised.
We see what’s happening.
And we are not going to stay silent.

Because this country was never meant to be ruled by one man’s will.

It was built on the idea that power belongs to the people.

No kings. Not now. Not ever.

For many years, Bob Gatty worked as a writer, editor, and communications consultant, based on the Washington, DC area with a focus on government and politics. He began at The Pittsburgh Courier, an African American weekly, covering crime and the courts. His salary was $55 per week before moving on to two local Pennsylvania dailies. At age 24, he began reporting for United Press International covering state politics in Pennsylvania and then New Jersey, where he was UPI’s state capitol bureau in Trenton.

Tempted by the allure of Washington, DC and big-time politics, at age 29 Bob became press secretary and chief of staff for two Congressmen – first Republican Edwin B. Forsythe, and then Democrat James J. Florio, who later became governor of New Jersey and until his recent death was a frequent podcast guest and co-host of Bob’s NFN Radio News podcast (now called Lean to the Left).

After seven years on Capitol Hill, Bob opened a communications business in Washington, first providing political media consulting to candidates and then freelance Washington coverage for business and trade magazines, plus creative communications services for trade and professional associations, including social media. This work involved articles and analyses of key governmental developments affecting businesses, such as the food and Health industries, retailing, and the environment.

His work as a communications consultant to trade and professional associations included launching and editing association publications, providing website content and social media assistance, and covering conferences and conventions.

Bob retired from G-Net Strategic Communications in 2016 and moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, where he launched his blog site, first called Not Fake News, now known as Lean to the Left.
