How to Style a Denim Vest for Fall (and Even Winter)

Who says denim vests are only for spring and summer? Today we’re proving that this versatile piece can easily transition into cooler weather. The prompt for our Ageless Style group is vests, so I wanted to showcase how to style a denim vest in multiple ways.

Quote of the day: “Don’t confuse getting inspired with getting things done. Create before you consume.” Marie Forleo

I had my crew work on how to style a denim vest in three ways, because you know we Love showing that there’s more than one “right” way to wear something.

  • Jodie: Layering a denim vest over a jacket
  • Charlotte: Using a denim vest as an in-between layer
  • Lesley: Wearing a denim vest over a sweater

Because of these layering ideas, this means you can get more usage out of your vests by styling them into the colder months.

Pro tip: 3 words for layering creativity: OVER AND UNDER. Don’t get stuck thinking a clothing item can only be layered one way.

The best part is you get a daily dose of positive energy.

Jodie: Denim Vest Over a Jacket

I remember when I first experimented with how to wear a vest over a jacket. It was an “aha” moment. I truly consider it a fun way to flip the script and create a whole new look out of pieces you already own. That is why I included 3 different examples for layering a denim vest over a jacket.

Wanna see how the original crew had fun with vests over jackets a long time ago?
Short vests
Long vests

This white denim vest was worn alone previously with white shorts. But by no means does that make it only appropriate for the summer months.

I wore the same barrel-leg jeans and burgundy t-shirt under all of my looks. I just switched out the footwear and accessories.
For this example, the white denim vest doesn’t extend longer than the striped jacket, but acts as decor.

Details:

-I wished I hadn’t added the denim flower to my headband, but it is what it is.
-Bag charms are my favorite way to give a purse some extra sass.

Jodie’s Extra Options

The trick to making this work is all about mirroring the collar and silhouette. That’s why I wanted to show even 2 more options of this idea. Once I pulled out a vest, and found a jacket with the same neckline and basic shape, it made it super easy.

Above: I took a white moto denim vest (seen 10 years ago in this article) and wore it over a moto faux leather jacket. This vest is longer than the jacket and thus it covers it in the back view.

Below: the blue denim vest has also been showcased many years ago. It has more of a basic collar and straight silhouette, and I found a light blue jacket that is the same. I buttoned one of the vest buttons to give it more shape for variety.

And yes, this trick can carry right into winter! You can layer a puffer vest over a heavier jacket to stay warm in the colder temperatures.

Charlotte: Denim Vest as the In-Between Layer

If the idea of wearing a denim vest over a jacket feels a bit bold, Charlotte’s approach might be more your speed. She uses the vest as the middle layer, basically a take on men’s suits but made to work for our everyday.

My mom layered her denim vest over a simple white tee, then draped a bright red cardigan over her shoulders. Of course, you can slip your arms in the outer layer if the temperatures are chilly.

Pro tip: If you have an oversized jacket or cardigan, these work great for this type of layering.

It’s a clever trick because the vest acts as both a fashion statement and a functional piece.

Details:

-The yellow purse gives a modern pop to the outfit instead of a purse that matches.
-My mom is wearing socks with her loafers. They are the same color, so not as obvious.

Lesley: Denim Vest Over a Sweater

Lesley’s look is a perfect example of how to style a denim vest over a sweater. She used a blue and white color combination for the entire look, and it blends well together.

Pro tip: If you are worried about looking too bulky when layering a denim vest over a sweater, just make sure the vest is looser and fits nicely over the sweater.

Details:

-The darker navy purse and loafers continue the blue and white theme, but are different shades.
-Lesley is print mixing since her vest has a puckered print on it, and the sweater’s stripes aren’t super defined.

Having Fun With How To Style A Denim Vest

Why a Denim Vest Works for Every Season

The reason a denim vest works year-round comes down to versatility. It’s one of those pieces that adapts to your needs, whether you want to add interest to a basic tee in summer or create depth in a layered winter outfit.

Plus, it’s easy to style across all fashion personalities. You can make it classic with neutrals, edgy with black jeans and boots, or artsy with bold prints and pins.

It’s also a great way to get mileage out of your denim pieces without feeling too heavy or repetitive. Sometimes a full denim jacket can feel too predictable, while a denim vest gives you that casual vibe in a lighter way.
