When I asked my email Family who wanted to twin with me with this skirt, I had a couple of hands go up. And because of that, you are going to get Mireille’s and Marsha’s views about this skirt, as well as my ideas of what top to wear with a sequin skirt.
Quote of the day: “A challenge only becomes an obstacle when you bow to it.” Ray Davis
This aqua sequin skirt caught my eye because of its large, almost disco-ball-sized sequins. The color alone felt fresh and fun, and since I Love a good style challenge, I decided to go back to my roots with how my crew used to style the same item in 3 ways: casual, smart, and dressy.
To make it even more interesting, I wore the skirt three ways by rotating where the slit fell: once in the front, once in the back, and once on the side. It’s a small detail, but I would argue that it changes the vibe of the look.
This is like a multiple inspiration post since you should click to see Mireille’s post as well as Marsha’s post with this same skirt. We may have bought different colors, and we all have differing opinions on the skirt itself.
In reality, inspiration is never about ONE piece, so hopefully it will inspire you about other items in your closet too.
I like to show the versatility of any clothing item. Today, we are exploring which top to wear with a sequin skirt.

Let’s start with the most unexpected pairing: a t-shirt. Mine is an owl print thrifted shirt.
When people ask which top to wear with a sequin skirt, their mind often jumps straight to silky blouses or fancy items.
But I love the contrast of dressy and casual together. The sparkle of the skirt with the laid-back feel of a tee creates such a modern balance.
And because I didn’t want to feel too “fancy,” I styled this look with white sneakers. The end result feels playful. And playful is an adjective that often gets lost in our clothing descriptions.

For this look, I kept the slit to the back, which is how it’s intended to be worn.
Pro tip: Sequins can be casual. The key is to downplay the rest of your outfit. This is the perfect time to add in your athleisure items or even a baseball cap.

Next up, the “smart” version.
For this outfit, I wanted to give you a monochromatic look. With sequins, you have a fabulous textural aspect, so I took my cue of styling many different textures from when we Jodiefied matchy matchy outfits.
Instead of wearing the cardigan the traditional way, I wore it backwards. With a scarf tied into a bow through the top buttonhole to create more sass.
Why backwards? Because it changes the neckline, creates interest from the back, and makes people do a double-take.
Pro tip: Just as many people see you from the rear, so give them something fun to look at.

With a backwards cardigan, the material can swallow up your neckline, which is why I added a long gold necklace and a brooch over the label seams.

For this outfit, I turned the skirt so the slit was in the front. I figured since the cardigan was backwards, the skirt should be too.
To copy the gold of the jewelry, I grabbed my gold Mary Janes.
While my first thought of wearing a cardigan falls into the “smart” category, I think this can be fancy too.

Finally, for the dressier side of things, I reached for a flowy, floral, silk tunic with shades of blue, green, and white. This piece adds drama and movement, which perfectly complements the sparkle of the sequins.
When deciding what top to wear with a sequin skirt for a more elegant event, think about proportion and texture. A loose, dramatic top adds interest and feels modern.
Shiny seems fancy, so even though my top and skirt are different textures, they both give off a shiny look. Matcy matchy but not really.
I wore my metallic silver heels with metallic silver socks.

And yes, I rotated the skirt again! This time, the slit was on the side, which worked perfectly with the draped tunic and gave a little peek of leg as I moved.
This outfit feels ready for a night out, a special dinner, or even a holiday gathering.
You might not think about rotating your skirt, but it’s one of my favorite styling hacks for making a piece feel new again.
The slit placement changes how you move, how the fabric catches the light, and even how the outfit reads.
Pro tip: If your slit feels too revealing, there are options to layer under the skirt:
-tights
-another skirt or dress
-pants or shorts
Never count an item out just because of the slit.
I know what you’re thinking: “But isn’t a sequin skirt too fancy for regular life?”
Here’s my answer: only if you believe it is.
No rules. No right or wrong. Fashion is what you make it.
It’s the clear message I love to showcase on my site, that all clothing is more versatile than you think. Need more inspiration? How about:

When you’re thinking about what top to wear with a sequin skirt, don’t limit yourself to special occasions. Try it with:
Sequins don’t have to be intimidating; they can be your neutral with a little more personality.
What I hope this article does is encourage you to pull out anything in your closet with sequins and style it for the day. Even if you are just going to the grocery store or hanging around the house.
Pro tip: Staying home is the perfect opportunity to style things you wouldn’t normally wear out and about. Call it your rehearsal for a different event.
And I hope you remember to check out Marsha’s and Mireille’s posts about this same sequin skirt (spoiler alert-they weren’t as tickled by it as I was).
I didn’t give you a review of the skirt because I loved it and can’t wait to style it more. Yes, the big sequins make noise when I walk, but that doesn’t bother me. I was able to sit in it with no problem, and I adore the color.
