Six Quotes That Shaped My Leadership (and the Road to Awesome)

Six Quotes That Shaped My Leadership (And The Road To Awesome) &Raquo; Awesome Road Sign 300X270 1There’s something powerful about words that stay with you—quotes, ideas, or lessons that don’t just sound good but actually change the way you lead.

As I celebrate the launch of my brand-new website, darrinpeppard.com, I’ve been reflecting on the journey that brought me here. And much like every road I’ve traveled, it’s been full of twists, turns, frustrations, and breakthroughs. Along the way, certain words have grounded me—reminding me who I am, what matters, and how I want to show up as a leader.

Today, I want to share six quotes that have profoundly shaped my leadership. These are the words I return to again and again—the ones that have guided me from chaos to Clarity, from Burnout to purpose, and from managing to truly leading.

1️⃣ “Clear is kind.” – Brené Brown

When I first came across Brené Brown’s words, they stopped me cold.

Six Quotes That Shaped My Leadership (And The Road To Awesome) &Raquo; Bigstock Road To Clarity Clear Communic 213536056 300X181 1For years, I thought kindness meant softening the truth—sanding the edges off difficult conversations so everyone could walk away happy. But experience taught me otherwise.

One of the hardest lessons I ever learned came during a tough conversation where I had to let a staff member go. I dreaded it. But when I approached it with clarity, not cruelty, everything changed. Clarity, I realized, is a form of respect.

When we’re clear about expectations, feedback, and purpose, we give people the gift of certainty. We eliminate confusion. We build trust.

That’s why clarity has become one of the cornerstones of my work—and the foundation of darrinpeppard.com. Because clear expectations build trust, and trust builds culture.

2️⃣ “You don’t rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems.” – James Clear

When I first read Atomic Habits, I felt like James Clear was talking directly to me.

Six Quotes That Shaped My Leadership (And The Road To Awesome) &Raquo; Img 1213 300X300 1I used to be a “big goals, little systems” kind of leader. I had huge visions—better culture, new programs, greater impact—but no consistent process to make them happen.

My team used to call me Captain Chaos because I started every day with good intentions and ended it chasing fires. I was living the superhero syndrome—busy but not effective.

Everything changed when I built systems that supported my priorities. One simple but powerful shift: I gave my secretary full access to my email and calendar. She scheduled priorities, not just appointments—and suddenly, I was leading my time instead of reacting to it.

Systems aren’t restrictive—they’re freeing. They create consistency around what matters most. That’s why I built the Take Control of Your Leadership course and the free AWESOME Leadership Action Guide—to help leaders move from reaction to intention.

3️⃣ “We are uniquely positioned to help the person we once were.” – Rory Vaden

This one hits close to home because it’s my story.

Six Quotes That Shaped My Leadership (And The Road To Awesome) &Raquo; Overwhelm 300X300 1Years ago, I was that overwhelmed principal—exhausted, reactive, and buried under the weight of everyone else’s problems. I thought I had to do it all. But the truth was, I wasn’t leading; I was just managing chaos.

Then a new superintendent came in and hired a leadership coach for every leader in the district. That experience changed everything for me. My coach helped me distinguish between activity and impact, between motion and meaning.

Once I found clarity and purpose, I realized something powerful: I’m now uniquely positioned to help the person I once was.

That’s why I do what I do today—through speaking, Coaching, writing, and training. My mission is simple: help leaders move from chaos to clarity, from exhaustion to purpose. Because I’ve been there, and I know the way out.

4️⃣ “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.” – Simon Sinek

This quote has been overused, misunderstood, and, frankly, worn out in some circles—but the truth behind it still matters deeply.

Six Quotes That Shaped My Leadership (And The Road To Awesome) &Raquo; Literally 300X300 1Simon Sinek’s Start With Why reminded me that leadership isn’t about titles, programs, or positions—it’s about purpose. People don’t follow a title; they follow a human being driven by purpose.

As a principal, my purpose was helping people discover their greatness—students, teachers, and families alike. Now, as a leadership coach and speaker, that hasn’t changed. It’s just expanded.

The new darrinpeppard.com exists to help leaders in every field reconnect with their purpose, lead with clarity, and inspire others through authenticity. Because leadership that starts with why always leaves a lasting impact.

5️⃣ “The quality of your leadership is reflected in the quality of your relationships.” – John C. Maxwell

Leadership is a people business—always has been, always will be.

Six Quotes That Shaped My Leadership (And The Road To Awesome) &Raquo; Img 1791 300X300 1I once had a teacher who was one of my biggest critics. For years, we clashed. But over time, we built trust through honest conversations and consistent action. One day, she stopped me in the hallway and said, “I trust you. I believe we’re moving in the right direction.”

That moment meant more to me than any award or recognition. It reminded me that leadership isn’t measured by titles—it’s measured by trust.

When people believe in you, they’ll follow you. And when they don’t, even the best strategy falls flat.

That’s the heart of Culture First Classrooms and every piece of my coaching work. You can’t fake Relationships. You have to invest in them. You have to make people feel seen, heard, valued, and trusted.

6️⃣ “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” – Robert Frost

This line from Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken is where Road to Awesome was born.

Six Quotes That Shaped My Leadership (And The Road To Awesome) &Raquo; Two RoadsLeadership, at its core, is about courage—the courage to take the road less traveled. For me, that’s meant walking away from comfort, stepping into the unknown, and trusting the call to lead differently.

There have been several “two roads” moments in my life—moments when I chose clarity over confusion, culture over compliance, and courage over comfort.

The biggest one came when my wife looked at me and said, “You tell leaders to take the Road to Awesome. Why wouldn’t you take it yourself?” That’s when I made the leap—from superintendent to leadership coach, speaker, and author.

That road less traveled has made all the difference. And this new chapter—the launch of darrinpeppard.com—is the next mile marker on that journey.

Because I believe leaders deserve clarity. They deserve to be intentional. And they deserve to walk in their purpose.
