Welcome back to In the Viewfinder, where I share activities from behind-the-scenes at how my stories and podcasts take shape.
Some vegan anniversary cake is in order: I’m coming up on one year since launching The Venture Variety Show.
Not everything I sketched out in a Google Doc happened, but I’ve learned a lot.
When I debuted the show in October 2024, I pictured talking with operators, investors and founders across disciplines and showing up consistently. Those parts clicked.
Other ideas are still on the whiteboard, such as a live show and an on-the-ground conference episode.
From day one my intention was simple: report on the under-covered shifts, stories and voices that reveal where venture and startups are really headed.
Podcasting has reinforced that lesson. While lists and headlines tend to spotlight the obvious, real insight comes when people have the room to wrestle with their ideas. A 20-minute dialogue on my show can surface nuances that don’t fit neatly into a press release. And I believe I’ve managed to capture some of that this past year.
Here are three lessons from behind the mic and why podcasting has become my best tool for finding signals you won’t see in headlines.
