Generation Z

Let’s take a moment and do a brief quiz. Below are several statements. Of all the living generations, guess which generation each individual statement would apply to.

·      What generation has the highest IQ but the lowest EQ?

·      What generation is the most globally engaged?

·      What generation wants community but isn’t sure they want it with commitment?

·      What generation wants experience without explanation?

·      What generation struggles with face-to-face confrontation?

If you picked Generation Z, you’re correct. Congrats. (And you paid attention to the title of the chapter…)

Generation Z is widely recognized for its adeptness with Technology, strong commitment to social causes, and emphasis on individuality. They have experienced the rapid expansion of social media, the prevalence of instant communication, and the overwhelming amount of information that bombards them on a daily basis. A comprehensive understanding of these factors is essential for coaches and leaders seeking to effectively engage and motivate this particular generation. It is of utmost importance to dive deep into these factors in order to gain insights and develop strategies that will resonate with this group.

From Reclaim Today, Daniel Day suggests that Generation Z has unprecedented access to information but has difficulty internalizing and remembering information. It is almost as if there is access to so much information that all of it is difficult to remember.

The research of the Barna Group accents the prevalence and dependence on technology. Their research reports:

·      64% of Gen Z students feel incomplete without their phones.

·      Outside of required school “stuff,” they spend 7-9 hours on their phone per day

·      51% of 13 – 18-year-old Gen Z’ers in 2021 said their ultimate goal in life was to be happy, and 43% said happiness was defined by financial success.

It is important to note that not all individuals belonging to Generation Z conform to this particular stereotype. It is important to note, like any other generation, that not everyone in this generation fits the stereotype of being tech-savvy, socially conscious, or highly individualistic. Some individuals may not possess these characteristics to the same extent. In addition, various factors beyond generational context can significantly shape individuals’ preferences and behaviors. Personal experiences and upbringing, for instance, can profoundly impact how people engage with these activities. Coaches and leaders must understand the rich diversity within Generation Z while understanding the general characteristics of this generation.
