How To Find Your Uniqueness-Unicorn Style
One of the most empowering things we can do for ourselves is embrace our uniqueness, especially when it comes to personal style. Fashion isn’t about fitting into a mold or following every trend that comes our way—it’s about curating a wardrobe that speaks to who we are.
It’s one of the reasons that I was enthralled with the term “Unicorn Style”–thank you Francisca.
Quote of the day: “Every now and then a man’s mind is stretched by a new idea or sensation, and never shrinks back to its former dimensions.” Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr.
If you’ve ever struggled with how to find your uniqueness in your clothing style, you’re not the only one! We’ve all had those moments of looking at a closet full of clothes and feeling like we had nothing to wear and that we didn’t look good in anything.
But here’s the good news: finding your uniqueness through fashion is not only possible, it’s fun!
You may not call your personal style “unicorn style” because that brings up thoughts of whimsy and imagination.
Yet we are all rare creatures, so hopefully there will be a sliver of unicorn in every outfit that you put on.
1. Start with What You Love
Marie Kondo knew what she was talking about when she said you should keep things that bring you joy.
Have you ever bought a piece of clothing only because you felt like it was something a woman our age “should have”?
Or maybe you only wear casual clothing now that you’re retired.
I saw HOGWASH to all of that. And more.
The first step in discovering your unique style is to start with pieces you truly love. Think back to the last outfit that made you feel amazing.
Since we are all different from each other, you can’t successfully copy another person’s look to find your uniqueness.
Instead, you need to analyze some questions. When you see an outfit that floats your boat think about what was that look that resonated with you.
-Was it the colors?
-Texture of the fabric?
-Overall combination of elements?
Personal style often starts with an emotional connection. If a particular piece of clothing brings you joy or confidence, it’s worth exploring. These are the items that will help you create a wardrobe that feels authentically you. Pull out those pieces you’ve always felt good wearing and think about why they work for you. They’re a key to unlocking your style story.
InsiderTip: It’s called personal style for a reason…it’s PERSONAL.
2. Embrace Your Body Shape
Finding your uniqueness is about celebrating your body as it is, not wishing for it to be different. One key to personal style is dressing for your body shape, not against it. Everyone’s body is different, and clothing looks best when it complements your unique figure.

While many stylists concentrate on defining your body shape and having rules of what you should and shouldn’t wear with “your shape”, I like to think more globally.
In reality, even if you are a “pear” shape, you may still be shaped differently than another “pear”.
Insider tip: The other huge factor is that clothing items aren’t created equal either. So if you’ve heard that petites shouldn’t wear maxi dresses, please erase those types of rules from your brain.
The goal here is to wear clothes that highlight your assets and make you feel amazing—whether that’s form-fitting styles or relaxed, carefree pieces.
Insider Tip: Experiment with different cuts and silhouettes to see all the variety. But don’t think you have to stick with these. Keep trying new things throughout your life.

3. Ignore Your Lifestyle
Every stylist and article I read will tell you the opposite of what I’m saying. Sure, you might be retired and living in a casual environment.
But if you allow those factors to dictate your personal style, then your style becomes un-personal.
When I say to ignore your Lifestyle in order to find your uniqueness, I realize that you still need to wear comfortable shoes for walking excursions, and you still need a heavy jacket when it’s cold outside.
But just because everyone else is wearing jeans and a t-shirt doesn’t mean you have to.
Gone are the days when we should be blending in.
Age gives us the opportunity to showcase our uniqueness and have fun with our style.
Insider Tip: Of course, you’re going to create a balance between fashion and practicality. You can wear a tulle skirt to the grocery store. Why not? I swear I get the most compliments on our shopping trips. And compliments always make us feel better.
AND by wearing your “Unicorn style” to the grocery store, maybe you’ll inspire others to get out of being invisible.
4. Explore Color Palettes
Nothing speaks to your personality quite like the colors you wear. Colors evoke emotions and leave lasting impressions, so understanding which hues resonate with you can be a game-changer in discovering your personal style.
Insider tip: Did you know that color is the first thing that grabs our attention as humans? Don’t get brainwashed into thinking that neutrals are best for older women, all of the time. Sure, wear them occasionally but make sure there’s some texture in your look to give it some unicorn style.
Don’t be afraid to play with colors outside your comfort zone either! You might discover that certain hues you never considered make you feel empowered. It’s all about experimenting and having fun with it.
Your closet should be like your spice cupboard…full of variety and SPICY.
5. Mix and Match -AKA Stop Categorizing Your Clothes
Sometimes our goal to make things easy and convenient can be the antithesis of how to find your uniqueness.
We tend to get into ruts by wearing the same things, the same color combinations, and the same style of items.
One of the best ways to find your unique style is by mixing and matching pieces you already own. Take some time to play in your closet. Don’t be afraid to put together combinations you’ve never tried before.
Insider tip: This is not only good for your wallet, but you are creating new brain pathways.
I talk about dichotomy or yin/yang in our clothing all of the time for a reason. It’s very modern and adds a lot of unicorn style to a look.
Why?
Because I doubt anyone else will be wearing the same thing. And that’s a good thing.
Examples of dichotomy:
-Pair a feminine blouse with edgy leather pants
-Wear a structured blazer over a flowy dress
-Denim with lace
-Silk with wool
Insider Tip: Accessories are your secret weapon for how to find your uniqueness in your style. They can really transform a basic look into one that is more “you.”
