An Uncomfortable Truth
People experiencing homelessness deserve to experience the type of love that goes to battle alongside them, not against them.
— Love Beyond Walls
California singer/songwriter Rocky Michaels brings much-needed awareness to the plight of the unhoused and unsheltered, with his release of “An Uncomfortable Truth.” He shines a light on the issue of homelessness in a land of plenty. Written from the perspective of a person without a roof over their head, the lyrics provide the listener the opportunity to reflect on their own experiences and perhaps reconsider their viewpoint. Listen & read below, as Rocky has kindly shared both his music and the lyrics to what has now become the “anthem” for our Unsheltered: Voices from Street endeavor:

An Uncomfortable Truth (Music & Lyrics by Rocky Michaels)
Â
I see you walkin’ down the street tryin’ not to look at me Does my appearance keep you awayÂ
I might be a tattered one but you don’t know what I’ve got underneath as I fight another dayÂ
A casualty I might be of a downsized Economy Or a suffering victim of diseaseÂ
I might be a broken soul from a broken home just trying to peace things on my ownÂ
But you don’t see the forest for the treesÂ
Â
(Chorus): Here, Here I Am Will you even look me in the eye Can you hear me talking Or will you just keep walkin’ byÂ
Oh, well I am you and you are me and sometimes truth is hard to seeÂ
Everybody’s got a story full of torn and weathered pagesÂ
Plots with twists and conflicts to unfoldÂ
You can judge me by my cover but if you took some time to readÂ
A greater tale is waiting to be toldÂ
Â
(Chorus): Well Here, Here I Am Do you see me standing here at all Can you hear me talking Will you even answer to my callÂ
Â
Oh yeah, well I am you and you are me and sometimes truth is hard to seeÂ
There’re eight billion souls of us now livingÂ
And eight billion reasons worth giving a little of ourselvesÂ
For years I kept praying and hopingÂ
But my dreams they all left me long ago
I’m not bad but I’m not good at coping anymoreÂ
I guess I just wanted you to know
Â
(Chorus): Well Here, Here I Am Will somebody please make some time for me Cause I fear your missin’Â
Â
More to my story than you seeÂ
Oh, well I am you and you are me though it might be uncomfortable to seeÂ
