Baby, It'S Cold Outside - 5 Tips To Keep Older Adults Warm &Raquo; File 36

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), data consistently shows that cold weather kills more people then hot weather. This may be surprising to most Texans, however, during the Texas winter storm in February 2021, 246 people lost their lives, many to hypothermia. The National Institutes of Health (NIH), states that older adults are at an increased risk of hypothermia because their body’s response to cold can be diminished by underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes, medications and aging itself. Hypothermia can develop in older adults after even relatively mild exposure to... Continue Reading

Senior Placement Agencies - Simplifying Your Search For Senior Living &Raquo; File 19

Searching on your own for a senior living community can be a time-consuming and frustrating endeavor. All too often our agency receives calls from seniors or their adult children who feel completely overwhelmed and frustrated in their search for a senior living community that fits their needs and budget. Here’s a scenario that plays out over and over: An adult daughter posts on Facebook asking for senior living recommendations for her dad. Dad is very social and independent, he only needs meals and the opportunity to make new friends. The responses the daughter receives are all over the place,... Continue Reading

Spreading Joy to Seniors
April 14th, 2022

I am fortunate to have many friends who also work with seniors in my community. We all love to serve seniors, and we love to have fun. Every holiday we put together a “show” that we take on the road. We like to say we are not professional entertainers, but we are entertaining! This week we visited seven local assisted living communities to perform our Easter show. We danced, shared some interesting Easter trivia (did you know the first Easter eggs were RED?) and played Easter hangman. While visiting the 6th assisted living on our list, one of the seniors pointed out that I had misspelled... Continue Reading

BRAIN FITNESS

Brain Fitness &Raquo; File 10

You know that your body needs exercise, but did you know it’s CRUCIAL for your brain as well? I recently interviewed Ron Nevelow, with Enlighten Senior Care on my podcast, and he shared the 5 things we all should be doing to work toward (and keep) a healthier brain. Exercise – 30 minutes of aerobic exercise, enough to keep your heart at an elevated rate. Walking is the #1 way to do this, especially for older adults, followed by swimming. Social Interaction – when you interact with people socially you use different parts of your brain. Note having a conversation with a new person will challenge... Continue Reading

Spreading Christmas Joy
December 8th, 2021

I love Christmas! The lights, decorations, parties…but my favorite part is the opportunity to help others, especially seniors who are in need, and to bring a bit of joy into their lives. Last week we worked with Meals on Wheels of Denton County to help raise donations for their Senior Paws program… or “Santa Paws” as we called it. Seniors receiving Meals on Wheels are typically on limited incomes, and many have furry companions – dogs or cats. There is a need for dog/cat food, treats, toys, dog beds, etc. so we decided to host two fundraisers last week. People were... Continue Reading

The BEST GIFT Aging Parents Can Give Their Children

The Best Gift Aging Parents Can Give Their Children &Raquo; File 7

Conversations about aging and transitioning into senior living communities aren’t easy for anyone. However, it is imperative that you have these conversations, not just with your spouse, but with your children. The BEST GIFT you can give your family is knowledge of your wishes should you need to transition to an assisted living or memory care community. I’ve spoken with 1,000’s of families over the years that I have worked in senior living, and way too many have no clue about their parents finances or wishes. Unfortunately, most people work from a state of being reactive instead of proactive.... Continue Reading
