New York-based Jazz Saxophonist Jason Rigby

Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with New York-based Jazz Saxophonist Jason Rigby on his 2025 album Mayhem.

After nearly a decade away from recording as a leader, Jason returns with a groundbreaking duo album featuring acclaimed drummer Mark Guiliana. He describes it as his “official re-emergence as a leader”—a sonic and emotional departure blending conventional and “outside” improvisation in stirring fashion.

We dig into his deep compositional influences, from Wayne Shorter, Philip Glass, Ornette Coleman to classical giants like Mahler. Originally from Cleveland, Jason studied at Youngstown State, DePaul University, and the Manhattan School of Music. We cover his new project, inspirations, and his remarkable journey in the jazz world. Dig in.
