Welcome to a new edition of the Famous Interviews with Joe Dimino series. On this episode, we talk with acclaimed author, editor, and filmmaker Daria Sommers, whose remarkable life journey spans continents, cultures, and powerful stories. Raised in Bangkok, Thailand, and other locations throughout Southeast Asia as the daughter of a USAID official, Daria developed a unique perspective on identity, belonging, and the global human experience.
A graduate of Oberlin College, Daria has received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Sundance Institute, and the New York State Council on the Arts, while also earning fellowships from the MacDowell and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts.
As Managing Editor of the Veterans Breakfast Club magazine and someone deeply connected to both the veteran community and international life experiences, Daria brings a rare and compelling voice to storytelling. We discuss her new memoir, Sawadika American Girl, along with her upbringing in Thailand and Vietnam, her work in filmmaking and publishing, cultural identity, Family history, writing, and the art of telling stories that often go unheard.
This is an insightful conversation about memory, history, belonging, resilience, and the power of personal narrative.
