Reliable Information For Styling Denim Skirts in Winter
After seeing the denim skirt trend skyrocket I knew I wanted the 3 of us to think about styling denim skirts in winter. With a little creativity, you can style these versatile items for cold weather while staying cozy and chic.
Quote of the day: “People who rarely receive criticism often take feedback too personally and miss opportunities to learn.
People who frequently receive criticism get used to ignoring what others say and also miss opportunities to learn.
The thing to focus on is the pattern. If you hear something once, don’t let it wreck your mindset. There are many ways to veiw the world and not everyone will agree with your approach.
But if you’re hearing something repeatedly, think carefully about whether the feedback is right.”- James Clear
After showcasing the fact that denim skirts look fabulous even on women over 50, I knew I wanted to show that just because the season changes, doesn’t mean you have to put them away.
In fact, it seems like these items are made for year round styling.
Insider tip: If there is a front slit as part of your denim skirt and it feels too open, wear another skirt under the denim…for example a tulle skirt like I’ve shown.
While it seems obvious to add boots for styling denim skirts in winter, I love how we all chose different types of boots. In the photos below you will see slouchy flat boots, combat boots and tall boots with a heel.

Lesley: Winter Skirts in Winter with a Kimono
Lesley features a frayed denim skirt paired with a white long sleeve t-shirt under a kimono. Brown suede slouchy boots complete the outfit, adding warmth and texture.
Insider tip: Kimonos may be thought of as a summer clothing items, but Lesley’s even shows how she’s worn this same kimono in a fall outfit. There’s no reason you can’t layer it over heavier items.
One reason that Lesley loves this type of denim skirt is because of the buttons up the front. She considers it a bit more sexy and girly as opposed to having a Western vibe.

Why It Works:
- Layers are key: The kimono acts as both a decorative and a functional layer, providing extra warmth while adding a pop of pattern and color.
- Frayed details: The raw hem on the skirt adds a touch of casual charm, proving that winter outfits can still be playful.
- Tall boots are a winter MVP: The knee-high suede boots not only keep legs warm but also add an earthy, cozy vibe that complements the denim.
Insider tip: The advantage of tall boots is you can also wear knee socks in them to keep warm.

Details:
- Lesley used a clear elastic to hold her kimono ties together. Not only does it pull the front pieces together but also shortens it to change the proportion.
- Remember, your footwear and purse don’t have to match. The burgundy purse adds a great pop of color.
- The necklace mirrors the color of the boots so it all looks intentional.

Jodie: Eclectic Denim Skirts For Winter Style
For my denim skirts in winter outfit, I chose a longer A-line denim skirt. I was inspired by Mireille to layer one of my lace halftees under a t-shirt. I thought the lace sleeves mirrored the embroidery of the t-shirt wonderfully. Oversized pearls and a felt hat give a bunch of extras that I crave in an outfit.
I’ve showcased this same jacket worn with an animal print skirt in the past.

Why It Works:
- Color coordination: Teal accents are everywhere in this look: the boots, scarf, glasses, belt and jacket. By using the same color with other neutrals you tie the look together, making it cohesive and eye-catching.
- Mixing textures: Lace, denim, and suede create a rich tapestry of textures that add depth and interest to the outfit.
- Accessories make the difference: The pearls and hat bring an unexpected dose of sophistication, proving that denim can be dressed up.

Details:
- Even if you prefer to carry the same purse daily, finding one with interchangeable straps can be an easy way to change up its look.
- If it were colder, fleece lined tights would be part of the equation.
- I used the necklace and scarf trick to combine the two for a fun effect.

Charlotte: Double Denim with Pops of Red
My mom had fun with double denim. Her skirt is a straight-cut denim skirt which she styled with a red turtleneck, a denim shirt adorned with patches, and red leather boots. The colorful clutch adds a final playful touch.
Charlotte wore this skirt many years ago in the fall with bare legs and all.

Why It Works:
- Double denim done right: The patched denim jacket adds personality and charm, avoiding the “Canadian tuxedo” trap by incorporating a red top and boots.
- Monochromatic accents: The red turtleneck and boots create a bold, unified look that pops against the denim.
- Playful details: The patches on the jacket and the colorful clutch show how small details can inject fun and whimsy into a winter outfit.

Details:
- Did you see how long my mom has had these boots? They are from the 1970’s. It’s one reason I always love footwear…you can gain 5 pounds and they still fit.
- Adding patches to my mom’s denim shirt is the best way to make it individual. And make sure to check out the details on the back of it in the photo at the bottom of this article.
- The turtleneck was a maternity brand. Don’t be afraid to buy maternity items. While my mom altered the sides to make it more fitted, you might be surprised how these items feel looser and better.
Insider tip: Maternity jeans fit some menopausal women better. NO ONE will know they are maternity, so if they fit, buy them. Go by the shape, not the label.

How to Winterize Your Denim Skirts
If you’re new to styling denim skirts in winter, here are some general tips to get you started:
1. Add Warm Layers
- Pair your skirt with thermal tops, cozy sweaters, or flannel shirts.
- Layer with long coats, ponchos, or oversized cardigans for extra warmth.
2. Invest in Tights
- Fleece-lined or wool tights are a game-changer for keeping your legs warm.
- Play with colors or patterns to add visual interest to your outfit.
Insider tip: If you don’t have a variety of tights, you can wear your workout leggings instead.
3. Choose Winter-Friendly Footwear
- Tall boots, ankle booties, and even over-the-knee boots work beautifully with denim skirts.
- Look for lined or insulated options to keep your feet warm.
4. Accessorize More
- Hats, scarves, and gloves are not just functional but can also be stylish additions to your outfit.
- Just because it’s cold, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear bling.

Why Denim Skirts Deserve a Spot in Your Winter Wardrobe
I’d consider styling denim skirt in winter as a timeless option. In winter, they offer a refreshing alternative to pants while still allowing for plenty of layering possibilities. Plus, their casual-cool vibe makes them perfect for everything from weekend errands to casual get-togethers.
Insider tip: If you’re crafty, there are no shortage of videos to show you how to take a pair of denim jeans and make your own denim skirt. I’ve done this with a pair of white jeans and while it’s challenging, it can be done.
Yet, just like jeans, they could be dressed up and included as part of a “fancier” outfit. One reason I consider denim skirts perfect all year long is because as a skirt, it doesn’t hug your legs and make you warmer than you want in summer.
And then wearing denim skirts in winter is as easy as 1, 2, 3 with layering and the right footwear.
