If you’ve been following along lately, you know we’ve been exploring different ways to wear black and white. And because of these ideas, Marsha reached out to collaborate and show how to style a black-and-white skirt.
Quote of the day: “I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions.” Stephen Covey
Instead of focusing on matching either white or black with black and white clothing, we have shown other options recently:
–Groups of colors with black and white pants
–Other options with a black and white skirt
While those articles provide categories of color options, I thought it would be helpful to show you 7 different colors, including warm and cool tones.
I believe that one of the easiest and least expensive ways to make your wardrobe work harder is to stop buying new pieces and start experimenting with new color combinations. Sometimes all it takes is stopping reaching for what you always wear and trying something new.
Marsha is showing how to style a black and white skirt also, so make sure to stop in and check out her post.
I hope you join my email Family. It’s the place where I share things even before creating on my blog. It’s also my space for fun and positive content. In addition, you also get my free eBook when you sign up, but that’s not the best part.
The best part is being part of my community, where we inspire and lift each other up.
A black and white skirt is made up of 2 neutrals, so it is a neutral print. Because of this, it pairs beautifully with nearly every color in your closet. (In reality, I would say it pairs with EVERY color, but I’m being safe by saying nearly.)
The trick is deciding what mood you want to create. And the important thing to remember is that even with the colors I’m showing, there are more variations depending on the shade and saturation of the color.
And might I suggest you even dip your toe into print mixing? A black and white skirt is the perfect foundation for the challenge of mixing prints. (See how we tried this back in 2016)
I will admit that I did “cheat” a bit with a couple of these examples, but hopefully you get the idea of how all these colors go so well with a black and white skirt (or dress or layered skirts).

There is something timeless about red, black, and white together. It’s one of those color combinations that Lesley showcases often.
While my example isn’t a true black and white skirt, I’m sure you get the idea.
Yellow is a color I consider a “happy” color. And even though it is touted as a spring and summer color, I bet it would look just as wonderful in the winter months.

Pink is just like every other color in that it comes in a large variety of shades and saturations.
I realize that women of my age were brought up thinking that pink is girly, or at least I did. That’s why I hardly wore the color when I was working.
But now I realize that is silly, and I Love adding pink to any outfit.

Blue is one of those colors that almost everyone has in their closet. It’s been said that blue is the favorite color of the majority of women surveyed.
It may come as no surprise that denim falls into the blue category, and since we all wear denim with everything, it’s a no-brainer.

Green may not be the first color that comes to mind, but it’s one of my favorites to pair with black and white.
And as I’ve discussed with all of the other colors, there are many shades of green to tickle your fancy. Olive green would look just as great as this Kelly green.

Speaking of other shades of green…
Now I know this comes across as yellow, but in real life, it’s a lime green.
But that’s the thing. What is lime green?
It’s a combination of green and yellow, so since I’ve shown how both green and yellow work wonderfully with a black and white skirt, it only makes sense that lime green does too.
Wondering what else pairs with lime green? I have 15 examples in this post.

Purple is the perfect option (especially this dark purple) if you still feel the need to match colors. Because it comes across as dark and can almost appear black.
However, don’t rule out the lighter shades of purple, also. They would look fabulous styled with a black and white skirt.
When you’re figuring out how to style a black and white skirt, remember that color doesn’t have to come only from your clothing.
Consider adding color through:
This is the best trick if you are dipping your toe into trying a new color combination. By wearing a matching color to the skirt and then bringing in a “new” color with your accessories, you’ve taken a step in the right direction.
Don’t forget to visit Marsha to see how she styled a black and white skirt.
One of the biggest style lessons I’ve learned over the years is that creativity often beats shopping.
Before purchasing something new, challenge yourself to pair a favorite piece with a color you’ve never tried before. You might discover combinations you love using items already hanging in your closet.
That’s exactly why I enjoy these experiments so much. A black and white skirt may seem simple, but by changing the colors around it, you can create dozens of completely different outfits.
Why should you try this?
Not only do you save Money because you’re not buying something new, but you are also creating new brain pathways, which is always a good thing.
And that’s how you make your closet work harder.
