How I’m Wearing Brooches-How I Select and Choose Each One

There’s something wonderfully personal about wearing brooches. They come and go as part of trends, but hopefully, you don’t throw them out. I adore these types of accessories that create interest, spark conversation, and add personality to an outfit.
So when Tresi asked me about my rationale for selecting the brooches I wear with my outfits, I figured, why not give you an insider look?

Quote of the day: “Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.” Marie Curie

I suppose you can always choose your accessories randomly. Yet there is usually a method behind why I wear a certain one with a specific outfit. Sometimes I want the brooch to scream, “Look at me!” and other times I want it to be more subtle.

That’s the beauty of brooches. They can be dramatic, practical, sentimental, artistic, or playful all at once.

Why I Love Wearing Brooches

I think brooches are one of the easiest ways to make clothing feel unique without buying an entirely new wardrobe. Even a simple denim top or plain sweater suddenly feels intentional with the right embellishment.

And unlike necklaces that can sometimes compete with necklines, brooches can go almost anywhere, as we’ve shown in the past:

Stylist tip: I use these SO much in the summer because they add decoration without extra heat. When necklaces can be too heavy, wearing brooches still gives me decoration without added material.

I usually find most of my brooches at the secondhand stores, but Etsy also has fabulous brooch bundles for a great deal.

The best part is being part of my community, where we inspire and lift each other up.

I Usually Want Contrast

Most of the time, when I’m wearing brooches, I want them to stand out enough to actually be noticed.

If I’m wearing denim, I might choose rhinestones or bright metallics.
If I’m wearing a colorful sweater, I may opt for silver or crystal brooches that pop against the fabric.

For me, contrast creates visibility. Otherwise, the brooch can disappear into the outfit, and what’s the point of wearing beautiful jewelry if nobody can see it?

Don’t forget that if you aren’t a sparkle girl, there are matte or fabric brooches that are just as fabulous.

Sometimes I Want Them to Blend In

Now this is where fashion becomes functional.

There are definitely times when I use brooches more strategically than decoratively. Lately, I came to the realization that they could be extremely useful to stop gaping on a button-up shirt.

In this type of scenario, I usually don’t want the brooch to become the center of attention. Instead, I chose ones that blended with the buttons so they looked intentional.

Wearing brooches can be used functionally for:

  • across the bust area on button shirts
  • to adjust wrap tops
  • to secure scarves
  • to change the drape of oversized clothing

It’s fashion meeting practicality, and it’s no surprise that I love accessories that multitask.

Using the Colors in the Brooch

Some brooches practically style the outfit for you because they already contain multiple colors.

When I have a brooch with different colors, I often use those shades as inspiration for the rest of the outfit. It becomes a subtle way to tie everything together.

Sometimes the brooch becomes the “glue” that makes an eclectic outfit feel cohesive.

And you know how much I love outfits that feel creatively pulled together rather than perfectly matched.

Size Matters More Than People Think

One thing I’ve learned while wearing brooches is that scale changes everything.

Large statement brooches can easily become the focal point of an outfit.

But smaller brooches can sometimes get visually lost if they’re worn alone. This is why I love clustering smaller brooches together.

Instead of one tiny pin disappearing on a sweater, a group of three or five suddenly creates impact. It feels artistic and intentional.

Clusters also let you tell more of a story because each piece adds personality.

Final Thoughts About Wearing Brooches

If you’ve never experimented with wearing brooches, I’d encourage you to start small and simply play with what you have.

I think the easiest way to start is to try one on a denim jacket, cluster a few at your neckline, or use it to reshape your clothing.

You may be surprised how much personality such a tiny accessory can add.
