4 Casual Options: How To Style A Yellow Dress

I thought it would be fun to showcase 4 casual options of how to style a yellow dress when I realized we all had one in our closet.
Truthfully, I seem to have more than one yellow dress and you saw the other one when I mimicked Mireille’s outfit.

Quote of the day: “The producer of old age is habit: The deathly process of doing the same thing in the same way at the same hour day after day, first from carelessness, then from inclination, at last from cowardice or inertia.
Habit is necessary; but it is the habit of having careless habits, of turning a trail into a rut, that must be incessantly fought against if one is to remain alive…one can remain alive long past the usual date of disintegration if one is unafraid of change, insatiable in intellectual curiosity, interested in big things, and happy in small ways.” Edith Wharton from A Backward Glance

Summer is the perfect time to think about how to style a yellow dress. Many styles, fabrics, and shapes would work for your particular body.

Insider tip: Many women will say that yellow is hard to wear for their complexion. The important thing to remember is there are many shades and warmth of yellow. I’ve also written about 5 ways to wear a “bad” color.

Ways to Style Your Dress Casually

Gone are the days when wearing a dress meant you were going somewhere fancy. Dresses are an easy option for everyday wear also. They can be cooler in the summer months, plus you don’t have to figure out if the proportions of the outfit are correct. One and done as many stylists say.

Figuring out how to casually style a yellow dress brings about a couple of easy-to-add items.

  • Sneakers
  • Denim
  • Crossbody purse
  • Sometimes, it’s also the details about the dress like cuffing the sleeves or the material.

Insider tip: However, even if you have what you consider a dressy dress, that doesn’t mean you can’t casualize it so you can wear it more times. I would say over 75% of dresses could be worn any day because it’s not just about the one item, it’s how it’s paired with everything else.

Being able to take one item and make it work for every day makes your closet bigger and gives you more variety in your closet.

Since life is more casual, we have showcased casual outfits many times in the past.

The four of us all had yellow dresses in our wardrobe, so I thought we would give you a variety of options on how to style a yellow dress.

Yellow Dress With Colorful Accessories

Lesley-How to Style a Yellow Dress with Colorful Accessories

Both Lesley and Charlotte belted their yellow dress and wore sneakers. Yet the dresses have different silhouettes, and their extras create a very different look.

Lesley’s yellow dress is a tiered knit above-the-knee dress. It’s a flirty shape that is perfect for the hot summer.

Lesley commented: “Yellow has long been a favorite color for me and I have fond memories and stories about wearing a yellow dress as far back as high school and my first love. Yellow is a pick-me-up color and I’ll wear it even in the dead of winter when I need a bit of sunshine in my life. I not only wear yellow as a main outfit color but often as an accent color with other colors (blue, red, purple, tan…all of them).”

I love how Lesley added this striped thin belt even though her dress has no elasticized waist.

Her multicolored sneakers mimic the belt and then she also added the bracelet for more colorful details.

Even though her purse is neutral straw-colored, it’s a fun shape and adds a lot of personality to the look.

Charlotte-Yellow Striped Shirtdress

My mom cracked me up when she called this an overgrown shirt that morphed into a dress. She recently found it for $5 when a local thrift store was going out of business.

Insider tip: Since it’s a full button-up dress, it can also be easily worn as a duster or topper over other items.

One way to make a shirt/dress like this seem more casual is to cuff the sleeves. Then adding in sneakers and a straw hat keeps the look more every day too.

My mom’s belt looks like a scarf, but it has a bunch of gold rings in the back that it’s braided through. However, you could wear any scarf around your waist as a belt.

Insider tip: I’ve learned that using a scarf clip for your belt buckle creates a much flatter surface than tying the ends. As seen in this video.

Jodie-Adding a Topper to Your Yellow Dress

Adding a third piece is an easy way to change up the look of any dress. Since we were working on the idea of how to style a yellow dress casually, I added a denim vest.

And to add more personality to the vest, I threaded a short, skinny scarf through the buttonholes.
The other way I added colorful elements was with my bracelet, earrings, and purse strap.

Insider tip: Did you know that many purses’ straps can be switched out? There are loads of varieties of these straps to give the purse a different look from day to day without moving the contents of your bag.

With many colorful items in my outfit, I brought in neutral brown for my ankle boots, purse, and hat.

Ankle boots are another great footwear option that could make a dress seem more every day.

Combining Yellow And Red In An Outfit

Suzann-Wearing a Scarf as a Skirt OVER a Dress

I just LOVE how Suzann layered over the skirt part of her dress with a scarf. She reasoned that the dress was a bit tight over her midsection. I have shown how multiple skirts can be worn over a dress in the past.

In fact, the best part about Suzann’s yellow dress is it’s actually a beach coverup. Yet that’s no reason it can’t do double duty for a day at the museum.
I wouldn’t have known it was a swimsuit coverup, would you?

To make it seem more covered, she even wore a red tank top under the dress.

Suzann’s scarf worn as a “skirt” has the color red in it, which is why she wore a red tank top, wore a red necklace, and carried this red purse.

Then she wore gold flat sandals which act as a neutral.
