10 New Things to Try: My “New 60” Challenge Gets Personal

As part of my New 60 challenge, one of the categories was 10 new things to try. What exactly are things? In all reality, these are the “things” that didn’t really fit into the events and places categories.

Quote of the day: Everything you want is just outside your comfort zone.” Robert G. Allen

Some of these are things “I’ve always wanted to try”. You know? Those items that you think about, but if you don’t schedule them, they don’t get done.

This category of 10 new things holds a couple of favorites (especially for Rob).

BTW, the finale for my New 60 Challenge (and feel free to visit the original idea) will be a European River Cruise. It’s scheduled for August, so I can’t talk about it yet. But trust me, I will when we get back.

I have already finished and blogged about
10 New Outfits
10 New Recipes

Why “10 New Things to Try” Matters More Than You Think

It’s easy to fall into routines. Same restaurants. Same errands. As well as the same outfits over and over. While consistency is a good thing, becoming stagnant is not.

But trying something new wakes up a different part of you. It’s not about being adventurous in a big, dramatic way. I would say that it’s being curious enough to say yes.

Some of these “things” could be applied to you and where you live. You may not have the “exact things”, but maybe something close.
I won’t go into all the details of my 10 new things to try, but I will give you the inspiration for why I chose them for my New 60 challenge and the result.

For these 10 new things to try, I included other friends if they participated.

I hope you join my email Family. It’s the place where I share things even before creating on my blog. It’s also my space for fun and positive content. In addition, you also get my free eBook when you sign up, but that’s not the best part.
The best part is being part of my community, where we inspire and lift each other up.

My 10 New Things to Try

1. Stair Climb at Verrado

We saw these stairs a couple of years ago when we drove by, and I immediately said, “I want to do that.” Rob was hoping that I was joking.
But we never made it back, so I figured this would be a perfect “thing” for my 10 new things.

It’s called Nature’s Stairmaster with 340 railroad ties that ascend 200 feet.
You can see in my photo that there are kids walking up the stairs, so it really wasn’t that hard. It took us about 15 minutes to make it to the top, and then we checked out the view for a short time before heading back down.

Insider tip: Valerie (who joins us occasionally as a crew member ) did this climb years ago and wished she had brought her walking poles for the trip down. We didn’t have walking sticks, but we took it slow and did fine.

2. Shopping the Goodwill Outlet Store (aka The Bins)

Rob has NEVER, EVER wanted to do this, so I asked Cathie to be my partner for this event. She goes to the bins regularly, so I figured she could give me the insider scoop.

This is not your typical thrifting experience; it’s a treasure hunt with a little elbow action and some rules.

Wanna see what I found? I taped a short FB live video.

3. Taking a Ride with Waymo-A Driverless Car

This felt like stepping into the future.

Phoenix was one of the test cities for these driverless cars, and we see them out and about all the time. I figured it would be a fun thing to try.

Would I do it again? Absolutely.
Is it scary? Not really. You have a monitor in front of you, and can see how the car “sees” the autos around it.

Insider tip: The fare is usually a bit less expensive than Uber PLUS you don’t have to tip.

4. Segway Tour Adventure

We’ve seen others doing these tours, and it looked so fun. When I researched it, the maximum age to go on a Segway tour was 65, so we had to do it before Rob’s 66th birthday in July.

I’m sure balance plays a huge part in this, but luckily, Rob and I work on our balance as part of our daily routine. And once you get the hang of it, it’s surprisingly easy.

Insider tip: They aren’t making Segways anymore, so this option won’t be available in the future.

5. Visiting a Cat Café

I’ve heard about cat cafes for a while now, and my friend, Heidi, said she’d like to join us. When I first put this on our list, we hadn’t adopted Maverick yet, so I thought maybe we could find a cat to bring home.

However, since we now have Maverick, we knew we just wanted to check it out. Although Rob did fall in Love with one cat named Maia…but we didn’t bring her home.

It’s a cool concept, and even though you don’t see all the cats at once, there were about 25 at the cafe when we went. And they limit how many people can visit at a time.

Insider tip: One friend commented that the cat cafe they visited did NOT have many cats, so it might behoove you to call beforehand to check.
This PHX cat cafe does provide validation for your parking ticket, which is nice.

6. Hiking the McDowell Sonoran Preserve

This preserve is located in Scottsdale, and we heard about it at one of the lectures we attended long ago.

We signed up for a docent tour, and while it was great, we expected information about the preserve itself. Instead, we learned more about desert plants and animals.

Insider tip: I wouldn’t call it hiking. It was more of an easy walk, and very doable for everyone of all ages.

7. Visiting Rad & Rae

This is a wholesaler here in Phoenix whom some of my friends personally know. In fact, these statement earrings I have are from her online shop.

I thought it would be fabulous to support her and visit her shop, which is only open on the weekends. My mom was with us, and we had a fabulous time.
Rob even bought a cross pendant for one of his chains.

Insider tip: She recently closed down her brick-and-mortar shop, so I am SO glad we did this when we did.

Ground Floor Artists In Surprise

8. Exploring Ground Floor Shops

My friend, Valerie, visits here regularly and has told us about it.
It’s a collective of artists whose studios are open to the public and where they also sell their products.

It’s definitely the definition of shopping small and local, which I absolutely love.

Insider tip: They are closing down, but there are other artist collectives in the area, including WHAM.

9. Walking Tour of Litchfield Park

Rob and I just LOVE taking walking tours, and since my mom and Lesley can’t really do that anymore, we decided to take the walking tour of Litchfield on our own.

It’s an area relatively close to our house, and we’ve been there many times for lectures and events, but it was quite educational to have a tour of the places.

Insider info: The town of Litchfield started as a company town as part of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. It has such an interesting history and so many original buildings.

10. The Grand Finale: Our River Cruise (Coming Soon)

This one is still on the horizon, and I’m including it in 3 categories since it’s such a biggie…it will be a new event, a new place, AND a new thing.

A river cruise is one of those things many of our friends have done and still talk about, so we thought this would be the perfect time to experience it.

Insider info: We are taking an AmaWaterways cruise from Budapest to Germany in August.

What I Learned From Trying 10 New Things at 60

  • You don’t need to go big or spend a lot of Money. You can Google free things near me and find a bunch of options.
  • New experiences are a learning process, and that is good for our brains.
  • There’s no expiration date on curiosity. The more we learn, the better.

I’m super glad I came up with the idea to try 60 new things for my 60th birthday. And I love how we have tried things that we’ve talked about and just haven’t gotten around to before.

You don’t need a special birthday to come up with a list of 10 new things to try.

If you’re anything like us, you may talk about new things you’d like to do, but if you don’t schedule them or write them down, it doesn’t happen.
So let this be your nudge to do some new things.
