by Eileen PowellWhatever your party affiliation is and however appalled you might be at what is happening in America today, you might well be left speechless. Your world has become so full of chaos and uncertainty that you can’t find words to say, or you have words, but are fearful about voicing them.
What can you do if you can’t see yourself at a protest rally, or speaking into a microphone at a town hall meeting? You can vote and express yourself through your choice in the mid-term elections to help end the chaos.
Your party affiliation no longer matters. The polls will open next November and you will be in line to do what is necessary to stop this fascist government. Do it for yourself, your children and to honor all of those who died fighting for American ideals here and abroad against tyrants everywhere who threatened our American way of life.
If you are horrified to know that there are so-called “holding centers” in our beloved country where 32 people are kept in cages that have just 3 toilets, and no provisions for personal hygiene of any kind, your disbelief is because you are an American. One of our hard-won ideals is, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”
When did common decency stop mattering in America? Follow the horrible thoughts of the “camps” with the knowledge that people can buy “Alligator Alcatraz” shirts advertising the shameful facility as though it is somehow, clever. The current administration promises that similar facilities are under construction across the country.
If you and your Family are here legally and you are white, you don’t have to worry about being grabbed off the street, or the parking lot of a business, courthouse, church, or doctor’s office by armed and masked secret ICE Police. But what if your children are observers to such violent acts? What will you say to them, to quell their fears, and potential nightmares because they witnessed someone being wrestled to the ground, handcuffed and dragged off in a van?
You know who you are. If you buy the whole American ideals thing…then be proud of it. If you get teary-eyed when you hear, “The Star Spangled Banner,” then good for you. If you don’t get angry because some kids are getting free lunches at school when you have to pay for your own kids’ food, then you are fair-minded.
In fact, you are probably grateful that you are able to pay, and that all kids are eating lunch. You might be one of those pesky liberals because you care about others. You might recall that there is something in the Bible about those ideals. However, you supposedly cause all of the trouble for the current government operating under the guise of conservatism.
But, they are not conservative.
The solid Republicans are the ones who regret their vote last November and cannot believe how far they were misled during the campaign. They are members of the true conservative party, mainly because they believe in less government. Sadly, they didn’t know they were signing on to a government that is so intrusive that they have become fearful in their own country that they might say something wrong, and be punished.
It is good to Love our America, “the land of the brave and the free,” as is said in one of our many patriotic songs. Listen to the songs, to see if they still apply to this government. They don’t.
Cheer on those who are demanding free and fair elections. Vote, and peace be with you.
