Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is upset with the GOP. Guess it’s not crazy enough for her.
When Party Leaves You Behind
by Robert Thompson
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) recently told the *Daily Mail* that she’s not sure if she’s leaving the Republican Party—or if it’s leaving her. “I think the Republican Party has turned its back on America First and the workers and just regular Americans,” she said. For someone who built her entire political persona around MAGA orthodoxy and shock-value soundbites, the moment almost sounds introspective.
Bless her Karen heart.
But let’s not mistake this for some courageous break with ideology. Greene, like many others on the far-right fringe, is less “leaving the party” and more complaining that the party isn’t extreme or loyal enough. It’s not about principle—it’s about power. And when the GOP’s financial and strategic donors stop answering the call, the disillusionment sets in fast.
Here’s the irony: establishment Republicans—what used to be called “Bush Republicans”—have also long felt alienated from today’s GOP. They watched as Trumpism bulldozed over their fiscal conservatism and diplomatic caution. Many of them now float in a sort of political purgatory, wondering whether the party will ever “come to its senses.” But they still write the checks.
They still hope—despite all evidence—that the same machine they helped build will somehow rescue them from the chaos it now fuels.
It’s a strange political moment when both the fringe and the former core of a party feel abandoned. Greene’s America First lament isn’t about workers or everyday Americans—it’s about control over the narrative. It’s about being the loudest voice in the room, and realizing that room is starting to tune out. Meanwhile, the old guard is still checking their bank accounts, praying the party they once knew will start acting like a Fortune 500 boardroom again.
They’re all disillusioned. But they still keep showing up. Still writing checks. Still pretending the GOP of Reagan or Trump or *whoever* might somehow re-emerge, whole and clean, to save them—financially, politically, spiritually.
The truth? The Republican Party isn’t one party anymore. And maybe it hasn’t been for a long time.
And if it’s leaving *all* of them behind?
Well, maybe that’s the point.
Robert Thompson is a visionary in the realm of progressive media, founding Peach News Now several years ago. The media platform transcends traditional boundaries to bring news and perspectives to the forefront via radio, social media, podcasts, and more. Robert is one of three panelists on The Dixie Dems, a monthly feature of the Lean to the Left podcast.
For many years, Bob Gatty worked as a writer, editor, and communications consultant, based on the Washington, DC area with a focus on government and politics. He began at The Pittsburgh Courier, an African American weekly, covering crime and the courts. His salary was $55 per week before moving on to two local Pennsylvania dailies. At age 24, he began reporting for United Press International covering state politics in Pennsylvania and then New Jersey, where he was UPI’s state capitol bureau in Trenton.
Tempted by the allure of Washington, DC and big-time politics, at age 29 Bob became press secretary and chief of staff for two Congressmen – first Republican Edwin B. Forsythe, and then Democrat James J. Florio, who later became governor of New Jersey and until his recent death was a frequent podcast guest and co-host of Bob’s NFN Radio News podcast (now called Lean to the Left).
After seven years on Capitol Hill, Bob opened a communications business in Washington, first providing political media consulting to candidates and then freelance Washington coverage for business and trade magazines, plus creative communications services for trade and professional associations, including social media. This work involved articles and analyses of key governmental developments affecting businesses, such as the food and Health industries, retailing, and the environment.
His work as a communications consultant to trade and professional associations included launching and editing association publications, providing website content and social media assistance, and covering conferences and conventions.
Bob retired from G-Net Strategic Communications in 2016 and moved to Myrtle Beach, SC, where he launched his blog site, first called Not Fake News, now known as Lean to the Left.
Hijacked Nation
In August, 2020, Bob and co-author Chris Waldron, one of Lean to the Left's most loyal and prolific contributor, published "Hijacked Nation-Donald Trump's Attack on America's Greatness," a two-volume compilation of blogs regarding Trump's presidency and the consequences for our nation. A followup volume was published by Luna Global Media in September 2024. It is available at https://amzn.to/4ePrTF7 .
In all three volumes, blogs from Not Fake News and Lean to the Left create a virtual play-by-play of key actions of the Trump administration and Congress.
