If there’s one beauty myth I’d Love for us to toss out right alongside ugly “comfy” shoes and “age-appropriate” fashion rules, it’s the rigid makeup tips for mature skin.
You know? Those ideas that “makeup” has to become boring as we get older.
Quote of the day: “If you want something you’ve never had. You must be willing to do something you’ve never done.” Unknown
Somewhere along the way, many of us were fed the hogwash that once we hit a certain age, we should stick to neutral lips, matte eyeshadows, and barely-there looks. But as with clothing, I believe makeup should be about self-expression, confidence, and FUN. Not those silly rules that have no backing.
I’ve shared many makeup articles in the past couple of years. Here are a few if you’re interested:
–Best mineral foundation for mature skin
–Ramblings on if makeup makes you look better
–Eyeshadows for mature eyes
But with those articles and some products that I shared in my emails came a couple of questions expressing questions, concerns, and disbelief that this was appropriate for us older women.
It all stems from the hogwash that we’ve been fed throughout the years. And I’m here to break through that nonsense, and embrace the fact that women can and SHOULD wear what they want…whether it’s makeup or clothing.
I hope you join my email Family. It’s the place where I share things even before creating on my blog. It’s also my space for fun and positive content. In addition, you also get my free eBook when you sign up, but that’s not the best part.
The best part is being part of my community, where we inspire and lift each other up.
One reason I wanted to share these makeup tips for mature skin is that I believe we’ve earned the right to stop worrying so much about what other people think.
That means if you love shimmer…wear shimmer.
If glitter makes you smile…try it.
If a bold lipstick makes you feel polished and powerful…rock it.
The trick isn’t avoiding fun makeup; instead, it’s figuring out how to make it work for you.
Many women are told to avoid sparkle because it “emphasizes texture.” And while placement matters, sparkle itself isn’t the enemy.
Stylist tip: Learning to embrace our wrinkles and changes in our skin is the best way to free ourselves from negativity.
The changes are going to happen if you’re lucky enough to experience more and more birthdays. Learn to love yourself as you are, and you will be a happier person.
Sometimes a touch of sparkle is exactly what brings life and brightness to mature skin.
Makeup doesn’t have to be about covering flaws. Sometimes it’s simply about play.
Think of makeup the same way we think about fashion. A scarf, bold shoes, or statement earrings can completely transform an outfit. Makeup can do the same.

As skin changes with age, many of us start paying closer attention to what feels comfortable and what actually works.
I’ve learned that products matter just as much as technique.
For me, I gravitate toward makeup that:
Personally, I have been trying hard to choose makeup that is non-toxic and better for our bodies.
Tip: How do you know if makeup is non-toxic? There are a couple of ways. Reading the ingredients is key, but it IS a whole different language. Most non-toxic brands will say “Phthalate free, Paraben free, Fragrance Free, PFA free.
The other option is to check the EWG website or download the Yuka App. Even those sites need to be taken with a grain of salt, but they help to make good decisions.
When I find something that works, I love sharing it, especially if it lasts through real life.

This foundation has been a favorite because it gives coverage without feeling cakey or heavy. Mineral-based formulas can often feel lighter, which is especially helpful when skin texture changes over time.
Stylist tip: I find that liquid foundation settles into my lines and wrinkles EVEN with a primer and good skin hydration.

Brows can thin as we age, which makes definition important.
This pen creates hair-like strokes that help fill sparse areas naturally. I love that it doesn’t leave my brows looking overly harsh, and it stays on all day without smudging.
Insider discount: The brand has given me a discount code for anything on their site. Use code Jodie20.

If you’re tired of lipstick disappearing after coffee, lunch, and life…this one stays put.
A long-wear lip product can make such a difference when you don’t want constant touch-ups.
Stylist tip: There are tricks to get these lipsticks to stay on better. I brush my lips with a dry toothpaste before applying.

Tubing mascaras are wonderful because they tend to resist smudging and flaking.
This one gives lift and length without that heavy, crunchy feeling.

Cream blush can be such a gift for mature skin.
Instead of looking dry or powdery, creamy formulas often blend beautifully and add that healthy, fresh color we all want.
A stick formula also makes it easy to apply and blend, plus this one comes 2-ended…the blush on one end and a bronzer on the other.
Stylist tip: I use this brush to blend my blush and bronzer, but any makeup brush will work.
I also still use Laura Geller’s serum blush. I’ve written about it and didn’t want you to think I’d discarded it.

At the end of the day, makeup should make us feel better. It’s not about rules and trying to look younger.
Just like with clothes, I don’t believe we need to follow certain fictional rules even if you have heard them over and over.
Think about the rationale behind what you think before you follow it to a tee.
We can wear glitter, sparkle, and bold lips. It makes NO sense to say women over a certain age can’t experiment, change our minds, and have fun with these makeup tips for mature skin.
If you don’t want to, that’s perfectly fine, but we shouldn’t judge others by our standards.
The beauty industry (and society) has spent years trying to convince us that there are “right” and “wrong” ways for everything.
It stops now.
I say we throw out that nonsense.
Because makeup tips for mature skin shouldn’t be about limiting ourselves.
They should be about finding what makes us feel beautiful, and most importantly, like ourselves.
